  Clio 172 FF Pearl Black
Just bought a 172 (2001) and in first gear, torque is monstrous, third an fourth are the same but second to be honest is a disapointment. Last car was a Mondeo ST200 so dont know if i'm trying to compare it as low down torque was fantastic!!! Any help please. Car is as standard, only thing i've fitted is K&N replacement panel filter.

Surprised at that.... my order is 2nd, 3rd, 1st, 4th, 5th lol.

Love 2nd to bits..... nails me back into my seat. Have done a few mods to it though but i remember a similar feeling towards 2nd when it was standard.

I love 2nd. Especially at the 5k kick (that some people say they don't have. 3rd is a great gear too; so looooooong. 1st is a great kick, but so is first in a lot of cars lol. 5th for me is poor, feels like I'm driving a 1.0L. OK, maybe that's gone a bit too far, but it isn't great.

torque? clio? not really.

Clio is a revving car without that much torque. Still its not bad, but it's designed to be revved (above 5k) to get the best out of the engine. If you want torque, get a diesel Golf or Ibiza!

On cam in 1st gear, only time the car feels fast!

But yes as you said, low-down torque is shocking. Put in 4th at 40mph, put your foot down and feel that lack of torque. :dapprove: Hence the need to change down a couple of gears.

Are you a complete khunt? What did you expect from an NA2.0? If you want to feel some serious urge in 4th at 40mph then buy a frickin' V12, a turbo and/or a diesel.

yeah I quite like nailing it in 2nd, its the best gear to make the car feel quite quick.

yeah. imo even my 1.2 feels good in 2nd. 4th is also pretty good, respecting its not all that much different from 3rd, so slam it in 4th and floor it, simply because its fun to speed down the road without having to change gear.

2nd is crap in mine. 3rd is quality, just seems to go on forever. What mods have people on here done to say 2nd gear is the best?

I like second best...you have to be gentle to avoid breaking traction when exiting roundabouts...get it right though and it flies.

Plus it's the only gear you can use properly at anything like legal speeds.

thos vti civics are quit quick! rev to 8200revs! i should know i had one!

5th is not so good when you want to just sit at higher speeds as it feels like your screaming!

Get a few mods done and you will feel a small change.

You crazy fool! You should have kept the Mondeo. I sold mine 12 months ago and still regret it. Boo Hoo! Mine was a minter. I've included a pic below for those who don't know what one is.

It was an absolutely amazing car for the money. Bought mine Oct '02 from a Mitsubishi dealer who'd taken it in P/X. One owner with 28k. New £23000. I paid £8250 and it was just three years old! Kept it three years and should never have sold it. The noise when it got to the top of the rev range was quality. Can't beat a V6!
