Ask the following questions:

1. Is petrol essential? Answer Yes

2. Is the petrol market competitive? Answer Yes

3. Do the oil companies need to provide a discount to sell petrol? Answer No

4. Why do Sainsburys offer 5p off petrol if you spend £50 in the shop? Answer Read the question again and youll have the answer!!

5. What percentage of the petrol car market does Cliosport make up? Answer A very tiny weeny proportion

6. Is there any reason for the oil companies to provide a discount on their petrol? Answer No sensible reason that I can make out.

At the end of the day oil companies are here to make a profit and distribute their profit to shareholders in the form of dividends. Offering a discount on petrol to a very small percentage of the UK petrol market will have limit impact upon sales and therefore not worth the time, investment and effort setting up the infrastructure to administer such a system.
