Symptoms of a dead cat.

How can you tell if your cat is dead?

I've got a warning light up on the dash, but that doesn't mean anything really. I've noticed the car's quite smokey above 4000 revs.

It passed an MOT fine 2 months ago... so just wondered?

And me. Was about to post something rediculously sarcastic.

But back OT, if its smoking, is it blue smoke or grey smoke? If its blue smoke, it could be burning oil and the oil has clogged the cat up.

grey smoke... could just be because it's cold out but when on full chat the smoke covers the rear window! And then there's the light...

If the cat fails it will normally make the car run really badly and possibly make it unstartable. What youve described just sounds like condensation in the exhaust. Whats it like after an italian tune up?

I was going to suggest that.

Take it out for a good hour blast, blow all the cobwebs out. IIRC, you don't do many miles in it?

Italian tune up = Give it a good thrashing?

It doesn't get many miles tbh... probably about 6-8k a year. Daily drive is 2 miles through town and 1 mile of DC. Thats it lol.

If the exhaust was blowing slightly, would this cause more smoke and emissions light?

I'd take it out, get it nice and hot and give it a good blast for a while. Let everything clear itself out. Doing 3 miles a day isn't doing it any favours.

Exhaust blowing is a possibility, but I doubt it.

Angry Dog?

Been drinking again?

ruined my "it stops coming home to eat" joke :(

car needs a diagnostics session to see if lambda sensors are functioning (and other fault codes etc checking) and a physical inspection of the cat

If the exhaust was leaking it could cause more smoke but I doubt it would put the emissions light on.

It's getting the belts done at K-Tec in a few weeks... If it's no better I'll get them to plug it in. Cheers.

Get some foofoo juice in there (wynns injector cleaner)... or 250ml paraffin on a full tank, and drive to woolacombe for a surf.

In these temperatures, driving your car for only 3 miles would mean that various parts aren't reaching their full operating temperature.

There's also your battery too - it takes 15 mins or driving to topup from your last cold start.
