hi has anyone used a external hard drive with fire wire 800 to do time machine?

how long does time machine take through usb? the first time

I've got a 500gb portable external hard drive by western digital but think i may get a bigger one for time machine

lol sorry just not done it before was just after a rough guess is the thunderbolt port the same as fire wire 800 I'm having trouble finding out for sure.

It's not the same.

It depends how much data you have on your computer. It'll take a lot longer the first time, obviously. But time doesn't really matter, it doesn't interfere with anything. Just let it crack on in the background.
