Trackday Gearset options?

  Some of a Clio 1.8 16v
Just looking to find out what people know is out there that I don't already really. Basically my little mk1 track clio is fitted with a 220bhp throttlebodied f4r as many of you know and a clio 172 cup gearbox with a gripper LSD. The problem I've recently noticed is 5th gear in my gearbox is too high IMO. On a recent trackday at Bedford i started stepping my game up a bit and taking things a bit faster stretching the cars legs a bit more. This highlighted a problem to me that when you go from 4th to 5th the revs drop radically and the engine falls out of the powerband. This I don't much like as Bedford has some long fast corners I now need to be in 5th for but in doing so the car feels light and unnerving as it's not really pulling. A trip round the track in a 6speed caterham later in the day confirmed that a good gear ratio for track makes a car much better on track too.

The box in the car at the mo is a bit tired and will probably need to be pulled for a rebuild at some point fairly soon so I was thinking while its out it might be worth looking into sorting this. I've considered dropping the final drive a little but as far as I can work out that will still leave me with a large step between the last 2 gears so I'm wondering what other options are out there?

Cheers. Chris
