Ubuntu

Installed it yesterday and really like it so far. Seems so much smoother and quicker than XP. However, I did the try it before installing thing, decided to install from inside the GUI and the b*****d thing formatted my hard drive instead of installing alongside windows! Not impressed by that tbh, but nothing I can do

Erm, if it did that its because you told it to lol.. it asks you what you want to do, then warns you if you select the option to use the whole hard drive.

PEBKAC TBH !

I accept that, but out of the two options that weren't 'Manual' I selected the one that didnt say 'use whole drive'. I can't remember exactly how they were worded but whats done is done and this is more of a rant about it than anything else

Gnome - just wondering if you installed anything other than it?

KDE is more like windows, I prefer Gnome though. You can install them all at once if you sudo apt-get install kde-desktop. You can do the same for other windows/desktop managers and select them from when you login. You just click on sessions at the login screen and select which one you want i.e gnome, kde etc.

That's how I found I prefered gnome

think I am going to reinstall windows. Ubuntu seems unbelievably unstable on my laptop! I am currently only using Pidgin and Firefox and I have had the whole system hang once and currently the task bars have stopped working so I have to change window by alt+tab

If you know you prefer KDE you can save time and just download Kubuntu ;)

Compiz having problems with your graphics card maybe ?

If your still wanting to give it a go, try one of the other distro's.

no driver issues at all apparently. I googled people running linux on my laptop and they reported no problems. Tbh its almost as if the longer it runs the more stops working. Pidgin is still showing as running on my taskbar, and the missus says I am still showing as online but I cant alt+tab to it and before that my sound died.

Back to windows for me. Its a shame becaue I wanted to like it, and I do, when it works
