Unknown misfire fault (possibly cylinder 3)

  Freetrack&Monaco 172
Guys,

Have been having stuttering and lumpy at low revs (below 3k) for a couple of weeks, hence I bought a new pre-cat lambda last weekend but as yet not fitted.

Driving home yesterday when hesitance/stuttering got much much worse. Still idles well but car vibrates. At driving speeds she sounds like a tractor/subaru. Is down on power.

My fault code reader brings up 'P0303', and refers to a misfire on cylinder 3.

I have tried to fault-find last night, there is spark there (still have the plugs/leads from my dead engine so have swaped the plugs across), unsure of injector or coilpack potential problems. Unplugging the HT lead at the coilpack for cylinder 3 results in no change when running. Unplugging any of the others causes the engine to stall. Also when pulling the leads out, I dont seem to get a jolt from the offending one but a good 'ol shock from the others so was thinking coilpack......

Any ideas would be helpfull?!? Have had a read of all the other threads of similar problems and have list of things to try i.e. injectors, coilpack, TDC sensor. Will fit my new lambda tonight to see if it cures it.....

Will update when I find the problem/cure!

I had the same thing last month, checked everything....turned out to be an injector (as it happens on No 3 as well!)

Renault Centre were very helpful and fast delivery if your desperate....and give CS discount!

HTH

Could be the coil pack mine went on my cat twice! So by the sounds of it they're subceptable to breaking try and get a replacement coil pack from the scrappy so you can test the idea so it's cheap and not pocket destroying

Have you cured it yet ? Did the new lambda work out for you ?

I'm thinking either that or the injector like mentioned above. Also i have learned that an injector fault rarely shows up on diagnostics, will point you in the direction of the "Throttle positioning..." faults if an injector is down

FIXED

Fitted the Lambda I purchased and there was no difference so it came off again and into the bottom of the box (i was a bit sneaky and made it look like it hadn't been out the box otherwise I wouldn't have been able to return it, whoops :p) so returned that to an 'undisclosed' vendor in exchange for a new valeo coilpack, with a bit of a refund too. Four bolts to swap them and it sorted it immediately! The old one was likely to be the original one, and the shell of my Cup is on 105k now, so think it has done well!

Win! :D
