Upgrade: Pug 106 to PH1 RS

  106 GTi
Morning all.

I posted up a similar thread over my local forum way, but now thought id ask
the supposed experts on this :rasp:

Currently I own a "track ready" 2002 106 GTi, love it to bits but Im feeling as if
Ive come to the end of the road with it now.. So have looked towards selling up
and joining the Renault Sport group in the form of a Iceberg Silver Phase 1.

Heres the GTi for reference:

Now with the Clio, Id want to know a few things before picking one up. I spent
yesterday evening looking up information I needed from this site but still have
a few further questions.

With regards to wheels, I was looking at fitting a set of Speedline Turini's initially
(yes I know the norm), but they dont do them in 15x7 from research. So was
looking into the Speedline 2118:

Anyone know if they come in 100x4 and also what offset choices I have with
regards to them. I know the Phase One runs an ET43 as standard, Id want to
run a sider offset (as much as possible) that is safe for both road and track use.

I was thinking about an ET35ish profile? Its a shame as Speedline dont list
things like ET and stud patterns on their sites.

With regards to suspension, Im wanting low but useable on a track, simple as
that. Any ideas?

With regards to interior, can doorcards and fittings from a Phase Two be
swapped over with the Phase One?

And finally just a general question, I know people really rate them over here
but what are they like to live with? Performance wise/reliability/servicing etc
etc etc.

Thanks in advance guys.

A lot of people run 2118's, Palmersport run them on their race cars too.

Performance, if you GTi is modified, theres sod all in it really. Above a ton, the 172 will feel quicker but again, depends what state of tune your GTi is in. They are pretty bomb proof if you get a good one, exhausts rot, aux/cam belts need to have the intervals followed (shortening them is a good idea) religiously though, aux belt snapping takes out the cambelt 99% of the time.

You can use ph2 door cards and dash if you REALLY wanted, but most of the conections and plugs are different. While its not a massive job, its a PITA and carbon looks better ;)

Thanks for the further information guys. The Pug is only running breathing mods unfortunately.

Im after a car with similar performance but without the fixed buckets and cage etc etc.

Plan the Clio to be a car I can comfortably take from road to track.

Awesome guys, again thanks again. Just looking into weights and offsets of these wheels
now.

Ive had my Phase 1 since March last year and ive only ever had to replace one faulty coil pack. I really cant fault it apart from that. The only other achillies heel of the Renault Sport range, and i think i pretty much speak for everyone when i say the exhausts are really poorly constucted, they could have done a far better job but hey-ho everything has pros and cons!

Fuel economy is as you would expect 30mpg when giving it the shoe down and low fortys when taking it easy. Not much worse than the VTS i had (which got about 33/34 all day long)

The performance is amazing from the Phase 1, the draw of the induction is so addictive! Id have another in a minute!

Cheers buddy thats very helpful :D I plan to go for updates including an uprated manifold,
decat and stealth system exhaust (think thats the one Ktec do?) Dont want a fat lairy
exhaust on show so that sounds perfect. So hopefully that will eliminate the exhaust issues?

Ideally Id love to put it on enclosed ITBs (but standard head/cams), but it looks that
the setup is more expensive on the CS over the GTi/VTS.

Again thanks man,

Ph1 172's are a realy good car if you get a mint condition one. Its an upgrade i'm hoping to make later in the year.

The standard manifolds are very well designed mate, the 172's are 4-1 and the 182's 4-2-1. The 182 is better for low down torque but most people that have swapped claim to lose out slightly higher up. The cat on the 172 manifold is a b**ch to fit/remove, where as the 182 manifold pushes the cat underneath and is a doddle to change.

IMO, dont change the manifold. The exhausts are well designed too and you dont gain masses from them apart from longevity as they rot to feck.

When you say you dont want buckets, when you drive a Clio, you'll change your mind as the standard seating position is toss!

Hi, As you have been told the pro's & con's by most it might be worth you having a look through the project threads, as you'll see most change the seats, i felt better seats gave a better improvment to coilovers :quiet:, you can have upto 180+bhp for £400-£800 depending on if you buy parts new or second hand

I plan ( hope  ) to have the whole thing done for under £3k & that includes buying the car, i currently have a PH2 172 as the daily driver & most say out of the 2 the PH1 is more raw/fun

Pug looks ace by the way ;)
