valver query

1.8 16v phase 1.

Seems to be using up a lot of oil, i no they are thirsty but seems like im topping up all the time. If i leave the cap off (where you out the oil in) and start the car say for a few minutes will oil spurt out? Just wondering if this may help the flow of oil round the engine.

Also when i do top up the oil to the right level i get white smoke from the exhaust, is this a problem

ok well i will base my calculations on these. My oil gauge doesnt work so will have to use the dipstick. Can i get to the sensor easily maybe it just needs a clean. Anyone know where it is?

i have the same problem mate, topping up with oil quite regularly but then im pretty sure my valve steam oil seals are away.

This is also a reason for the smoke out the back say for example when you lift off at 70mph and then put the power on again or drop a gear youll get a puff of smoke. Sound familiar at all?

I do seem to get a fair bit of "steem" out of my exhaust on my valver, the head gasket went about 600 miles ago but has been replaied could this just be caused by there still being some water in with the oil?? The oil was flushed and changed whent he head gasket was replaced.

If its using a lot of oil, it could be:

Worn piston rings (Blue smoke everywhere)

Worn VALVE STEM SEALS ( whats valve steam oil sills? no such bloody thing)

Oil leak.

dont get white smoke confused with grey or blue smoke

white is water vapour in the exhaust system (do u do short trips, not allowing exhaust to warm thro fully?)

valvers drink oil like its going out of fashion, nature of the engine, tho as they wear this will get worse and worse. seeing blue smoke from the back of ur car is a good indication that things are starting to wear.

i had smoke comng out of my exhaust..as did 5 of my mates..traced it back to local petrol garage..the owner was watering his fuel down...he is now shut down..

Its definatly white smoke... not blue or black even when the cars been running for an hour and its just sitting there its still comming out...

WORN VALVE STEM SEALS what sort of job is it to change or what problems could result. Basically should i be worried

Correct me if im just talking crap, but wouldnt worn piston rings be a more likly cause of oil being burnt?

blue smoke on hard gear changes is piston ring/bore wear

blue smoke on start up usually indicates stem seal wear

get ur car warm

let tickover for 5 mins, then rev hard in neutral smoke indicates valve seal wear as well

What about white smoke then? lol even after running for an hour its comming out of mine...

Well it looks like the steam when you switch it on in the morning, but it keeps doing it...

byproduct of combustion and then the catalyst is water.

Stem seals are the seals which prevent oil running down the valve stems, trough the guides and into the port.

ALL valvers make large puffs of smoke on accleration, downchanges, stamps etc etc. Its the natural acceleartion injection enrichment. Worse on our engines due to the large volume of the ports.

1tr per 1000 miles is normal, they burn alot of oil due to the under piston bore sprays which reduces oil to vapour and then is burnt in the crank ventilation system.
