:dapprove:Hi guys. The kids have a pc which weve had for good few years and with all the crap they put on there has got slower and slower. Now one of them has new lap top so ive taken in this pc and given it some fresh ram and cleaned up the hard disc blown out all the dust etc etc(i do know a bit about pc's and performance)Im running avast antivirus cos its free and ive never had any probs on the other 2 lap tops me n the missus have but this pc also has norton on it and i cant get rid.If i go to control panel,add/remove programs its not in the list.I can do a system search and it finds it but wont let me delete because its running!! Now the icon is always in the system tray but 9 times out of 10 i click on it and the comp crashes.Everything else works fine and its now much faster etc but i want that pesky norton out of it. i believe it came with the bt internet software which is now completely removed from the pc. We do not have the original disc though. Any ideas how i can get this menace off my pc????

is there not a specific Norton folder in your hdd/program files somewhere?

Most likely if you explore the folder an uninstall file will be in there.

If you're looking to stop norton completely for 1 time only (to allow an uninstall), can you not run program manager and force it to stop operating?

Pre-installed Norton is virtually impossible to completely remove from your HD.
It always seems to leave program remnants to some extent.

Boot into safe mode,
Bring up the task manager and stop all items in the process window relating to norton including the obscure stuff like CCSVCHST,
Then delete the program folder from C:\Program Files.
Go to Start then run type in " regedit "
Go to file\export to back up the registry should anything happen you can then double click the reg file genrated to restore.
Select find and type in Norton and delete entry highlighted
Press F3 to find next entry and repeat until none are found.
Then select find again and type in Symantec and repeat the two steps above.
This removes Norton from your system so you can install another Firewall or AV program or even a newer version of norton.
