Warming it up

  Ziel Nurburgring

How long do you allow your engine to warm up before you start giving it some? Do you go for it straight away, or do you give it 10 minutes? Just though id ask and see if it makes any difference.....

i drive below 3000rpm until it warms up.

ive always done it.

I give it like 10 mins before going up to about 4 -5.. then once its pretty warm its all about the limiter.

I have an oil temp gauge on my RSi, a much needed tool. Takes the beast 20 mins to reach 60 degrees if I keep it uder 3000 revs at normal driving. Then I will take it to about 4,500 until I feel its ready!

Well, I just give it time.

On Cars with Oil Temp Guages, its like more than 60 - 80c when ya can start giving it some.

I read on here tho its not 100% needed.. Oil protects stuff, even when it aint warm I think.

I always drive mine gently for the first 10 mins or so to allow the engine to be fully up to temp...

Drive to about 3-3500rpm and part throttle until I feel that its definately warm enough, and I dont then just suddenly boot it, I build it up and the final check is to make sure the early rev limit isnt still enabled (meaning it aint fully warm) so this is the only time I check for the shift light.

Was easier on previous cars as Ive had oil temp and/or pressure guages.

What is your idea of warmed up though, is the guage being upto normal regarded as enough?
Nope!

The water temp guage on the 172 & Cup comes up to the middle (& stays there) very quickly, but its not warm enough straight away...

I give it about 10 mins staying under 3500 ish.

Even then the bloody limiter kicks in early!! (sometimes 10-15 mins!!)

Need to fit an oil temp guage!! - I was used to a golf with an oil temp guage that was up to 70 degs in about 6-7 mins flat!!!

i always give it about 10/15 mins worth of driving before i give it some.most of your engine wear is done when the engine is cold.

Ive always driven under about 3000rpm before the oil temp reaches about 80degC. Both the old Valver and my Willy have very helpful gauges for this. You can also use the oil pressure gauges to watch when it starts to drop in these cars.

Takes for ever with the Mk1 hot Clios to warm up, while it takes about 3 minutes to warm up on my dads straight six Volvo S80!

Water can get upto temp before the oil is hardly warm.....

I tend to use the oil pressure gauge as a better indicator, but let the oil get over 70 before thrashing it!
