What do you reckon





Been wondering for ages about what to do about my engine.

Toyed with the idea of a transplant so many times now, but if I am realistic I cant afford £2000 plus in one go.

So I was thinking of tuning the existing engine a bit, I know it will never be rapid, but just make it a bit quicker than average.

Anyway point of this post is, do you think I could stick twin carbs onto a 1.4 energy engine? I would like throttle bodies, but with the injection only being single point, I imagine this would be very difficult and very expensive.

I know twin carbs arent cheap, but at elast if it was possible I could get on with modding the head/cam/chip/manifolds for now with a view to finishing it off in the future with carbs.

What would be the pros/cons of a twin carb setup?

The best thing to do really in all honesty is to sell your car and get a 16V. They arent that expensive.

Not much of a carb expert myself...but selling up and getting a valver seems a better bet. Or just saving until you can afford to do the job properly.

BTW if you just what a lot of power for not much money then go for nitrous. Thoroughly recommended and unlike other tuning methods, doesnt need any engine work.
 


With nitrous how long does it last?

ie how much does a 20lb bottle cost and how long could you use it for?

In real driving conditions how long are you on the gas for?

there are great benefits to twin carbs, and drawbacks

you will never get the economy of a mapped igntion and fuel with carbs... but, the power can easily be the same...

I have VAST experience of weber dcoe and dcnf carbs... not bragging.. more comisserating the lack of use lol !! (and, my splelling is, and always will be.. sh*te )

carbs are cheap (now) . easy to setup with the right knowledge... and deliver the goodies where you could be screwed with an FI system..

you can tune till the cows come home.. and as Nick rightly says - as usual lol - the NOS is a great way to add power.. and to test an engine for future mods...

as for bottle length of run etc...

the million dolar question !

not long enuf is the common reply.. whatever you plan...

and the cost and availability of easy refills is prohibitive...


if ya can sort a supply - or main tank at home with decant.. then great.. but add the cost over, say, 2 years.. and you can add a turbo or tbs for less imho..

one day Nick will be suffering from forced induction syndrome, realise that ram air dont exist on a any clio type car lol ... and buy into some serious.. always available PROPER power .. hee hee...

you know Im never gonna agree with you on ram air Joe, so admit youre wrong!

Anyway after a lot of hard work, money and time, I have a Clio thats quick enough even without gas to cane most things on the road quite effortlessly. The gas is just an added bonus to take on the expensive frighteningly quick road cars that you come up against every now and again, Scoobies, Cossies, big engines Beemers etc. I love wiping the smile off their faces...

But on a 1.4 you might find that youre caning the gas all the time because once you get it youll be in the big boys league and able to put up a good fight against 8 second cars or thereabouts. All I can say is give it a go and see how you like it. You can take it from one car to another easily, theres no engine mods required, the gas is expensive unless you know a bent dentist or doctor to do it on the cheap - £5 per lb at the moment.

But nothing beats the power it gives you.
