what does this mean "DOCX File"

Tried opening a document sent via email but says its a "DOCX File" what does this mean when I do open it, its all symbols etc, how do I get to read it normally.

DOCX is an Office 2007 file, you can get a viewer for Word 2003 etc from Microsoft http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100444731033.aspx

.docx is a Microsoft Word 2007 document

.doc is all word documents created in versions previous to 2007

if you install the Compatibility Patch you should be able to open it in office 2003 for example

XML extensions, ultimately it's a great file-type. Just a pain in the arse it defaults in 2007 to .xyzX, most users don't realise.

Surprising how many .WPS files we still get asked to convert actually, who actually uses MS Works?!

No clue, I do know they come with every piece of Googleware under the sun though, and a completely useless Norton/Mcafee solution.

pretty much all oem or branded machines are shipped with works and a trial of office which always gets the customer worked up
