It's at the bottom of the windscreen in the middle on a Ph1 172

Looks like a heads up display or something?

May be me being stupid or something but I've never seen it before!

Nope, it's a gap in the window tinting for pre-paid cards on french motorways, iirc.

They all 'ave 'em.
 
It's because the windscreen is coated. There's a lot of tolls in France so you put your card thingy there so it can be read by the toll machines.

Pmsl! I wondered this for years when I had the clio!

its as everyone above said. thats why if you get your windscreen replaced you have to state that it has the gap in the window as they are higher quality than what they will try to flog you otherwise ( according to autoglass anyway! )

That makes more sense than the "it's for clearer sat nav signal" reason someone told me once.
