where to cut bumper if fitting an exhuast

  172 mk2
hi guys, thinking about getting an exhaust for my 172, want it cut into the bumper, and maybe fitting it myself.

how do you know where to cut the bumper? is there a template or a distance from the edge of the bumper where the first cut should be made?

is it easy?

my std is 6 years old and has just fallen off, need asap

Not wanting to sound scarcastic, but wouldn't you look to see where it needs cutting and then cut that point? Am i missing something out here?

i would offer it up to the car, making sure its all lined up properly. Then cable tie it in place, and mark where to cut the bumper. Untie the zaust and cut the bumper... then fit the zaust properly, tweaking the mount to make it fit the cutout snugly.

this is what i thought but if offering it up to the bumper then surely it wont be aligned properly? ie 2-3 inches too low may pull it to one side??

well yeah, obviously when aligning it to see where it will sit, it will be hanging below the bumper as you wouldnt have cut it yet.

i would align it so its in the right place, but below the bumper and mark it. Then remove the exhaust cut a semi-circular hole 20mm larger than the bore of the exhaust tailpipe. Offer it back up, and using a file adjust the cutout where necessary.

whatever you do, don't go cutting huge chunks out. Its easy to remove material... much harder to put it back ;)

my old car for reference.

ive since ordered a surround for mine, but here was my first attempt - wasnt that easy at all but the backbox was designed to fit an rs turbo fiesta which didnt help matters....
all i did weld the exhaust on then mark the edges, cut a rough circle shape (but too small) then just cut bit by bit till it fits
