Which one?

Good evening everyone.

I am currently looking into buying a Clio Sport, but not sure which one to go for. At the minuite I have a 230bhp turbo'd proton satria GTI and I want a change.

Interested in either a 172, 182, or a 197, it really just depends on the car and the price.

I have a question or two of which, the answers may be obvious to some but they aren't obvious to me.

Is there any 'real' difference between the 172 and 182?
I can see small visual differences and the backbox apparently seems very different, but in terms of performance, is is a different engine or simply a different MAP in the ECU?

Did the 172 or 182 come in white?

Are the 197 white cars a limited/special edition? Just because if I end up with a 197, I want it to be white and there aren't many for sale that I have found.

Anything particular to look for in any of the three models? I have noticed a couple of sales advertisements in various places stating engine swaps, is this just from over enthusiastic driving? or something more sinister?

Thank you in advance for any help.

172 is faster top end while the 182 has more torque but in reality they are both exactly the same.

182 has a different manifold/exhaust/ map. 182's also come with traction control/speed limiter and cruise control...

the 182 also came in different colours to the 172 :)

172s are generally cheaper than 182's also.

glacier white 197's are generally cups or F1's but im not sure if you can get a normal one in white? Some of the 197 boys will clarify that with you.

Engine swaps:
Not too sure. tbf they are usually really reliable however like all cars some break. Its cheaper and easyer to just change the engine half the time as its a straight swap with no arsing about fixing everything!

Welcome btw.:)

You can get a normal white 197 yes, if you want a white Cliosport you'd have to choose between a regular or Cup 197, as they didn't do white 172/182's.

Welcome to CS!

Not really much in it between the 1*2's tbh, variants in colours etc.

If I were you I'd pay the £10 membership, then you can peruse the various threads at your lesuire which will give you a much better insight into the various models/specs of each car.

If you have the moneyh then go for a 197.

If your after a white 17/182 there are a few out there that have been resprayed but it will be hard to find one

Thank you for the replies.

There's penty to think about and plenty to look through.

Although I work for a bank, I am canny handy with the spanners so most things won't phase me (including an engine swap). However, the main reason for me lookig at a sport is because I am looking for a quick car (probably n/a) that will require only regular servicing and general maintenance.

These cars look nice, are quick enough as standard, handle well and aren't overly expensive. Perfect for me.

I have done the whole 'project' and (for now) I am happy to leave my next car (mainly) standard. I took my 133bhp proton and made it into a turbo'd 230bhp car by transferring the engine etc from a lancer GSR, changed brakes, suspension etc but I have 2 kids and don't have the time anymore.

Been looking for the 'right one' for a short while now. Going to look at the one in the link below on sunday. Colour is all important for me on this car, don't know why, it just is.

Think I am keeping the proton as well though (can't bear to part with it after spending so much time on it) so going for a 172 or 182.

This one looks really clean from the pics. Going to get a HPI check on it as soon as I get the registration.

I can see the cars for sale (not the parts, just the cars) and I have looked through them, but not many close to me.

It's a big step for me to get a different car, I have spent a huge amount of time on the proton and if I replace it, I want it to be with something I really like the look of (including colour) that drives well.

The proton will probably end up as a track car. It is great fun, but is a little too extreme for everyday use, has plenty of handling mods (including Clio Sport Discs with Evo3 calipers) and is fast so should shake things up a bit.

Not sure if anyone is interested, but here's a couple of pics of the pooton.

Paid my deposit on one.

Getting cam + aux belts (inc pulleys etc) done and a new tyre (it's 'ok' but i was being picky

as it had more wear than the other three).
