ive just got myself a new garmin i3 in car sat nav for £169. As well as it bein a satnav you can use a points of interest loader and install speed camera loactions (free of charge) and all known mobile and temp camera sites etc. It works using gps locations the same as a road angel (ok it doesnt have built in laser detector) but for the difference in money and what extra you get its a no boner to my mind!

  106 GTi
I have an RA2 which I am happy with, but if I was buying now I would get the Road Angel Compact for the money.

i have a RA2, really can't fault it, but as r-jay said if i was buying one now it would be the compact, excellent value for money.

Well I have currently got a Snooper S4 Neo. Also just bought Navman ICN320, but you can't load POI on it - which is a shame. So I am thinking about taking it back to Argos, get a refund - then buy the Streetpilot I3. Once I get that, I will load the POI on it - then will sell my Snooper S4 Neo. As I wouldn't really need it.

I want SatNav & SpeedCam thingy all in one. Looks neater in the Clio then.

  RS 200
I had the Origin B2 fitted at the end of August. Is quite expensive but am very happpy with the quality of the item and its function and have heard very good reports about their support.

i went for the RA compact, brilliant value for money, probably the one to go for in my opinion, seems to have done the job so far!!

You cannot beat ur own eyes, hate to be cynical but i wouldnt trust any of them with my licence !

Its not about trusting them with your licence !!

They are there as a reminder.
I dont know where they have put new cameras..... or where i am travelling a few miles over the speed.

SPECS cameras on the M6 roadworks cud not be seen at night, without a warning i would have got a ticket for being a few miles over???

A good detector also shows warning areas such as schools, accident blackspots.
Its not to be used as a tool so that you can speed around in areas without cameras.

But yes, nothing beats being aware... but sometimes we can be caught off gaurd

  RS 182 - Black Gold
Anywhere between £200- £270 i would say.

they are brilliant lil units, if its unboxed take off a little.

They have just introduced a "transfer fee" of £35 to change to someone elses ownership, so note this in mind.

  182... again!
I understand the radar/laser detector will be made illegal soon! Am thinking about a RA compact myself as this is an option rather than built in. £200 in halfords so I wouldn't buy from ebuyer, they've been getting bad press lately but I've no experience of them!
Also considering a Drivesmart, no subscription charges! Cost £189 but not a cool looking gadget!
Reckon, a lot of it depends on the companies database as far as the GPS side goes, anyone any idea who has the best database and keeps it up to date?

As far as databases go. The only companies i firmly hold my hand up to and say they have good upto date databases are Origin Tech and BlackSpot.

I have tried pretty much every product out there being a reseller of these and in some cases the databases can be VERY old.

correct, the non GPS radrar detectars are being made illegal, well attempting anyway.

Road angel and some snoopers have GPS ive got the road angel classic, and couldnt fault it.

Opps,

I got a Snooper S4 Neo, and that has radar/laser detector.

But surely as long as you are careful with it in your car, then you would be fine? All you need to do is stash it if you ever get pulled over?

Yeah, I agree it seems like the obvious idea is to get the i3, but how does the quality differ between the 2 units, and how accurate is the i3 when it comes to camera locations, and does it give you an obvious warning, or do you have to keep an eye on the i3 screen to check if you're about to drive past one?

I was thinking of getting the RA compact, but as you can get the i3 for the same money, I started to consider this unit.
How much cash and how easy is it to update the Garmin to keep it at it's optimum for navigation?
I know the Compact is free for the first six months, and £3.99 per month subscription after that for a minimum of 12 months.

With regard to ease of use and access to info/updates on the net, the RA seems to win hands down. No faffing about searching corporate sites or whatever.
Is the Garmin camera/accident blackspot database accurate and updated frequently?

Anyone have hands on experience of both units?

Just swapped my Navman ICN320 in Argos, for a Streetpilot I3. Reason being is that you can't load POI on this model of Navman, but on the Streetpilot i3, you can.

Oh yeah, the Streetpilot i3 is much better that the Navman, by far!

I havent personally used the RA but i do know of a few people now who have opted to get rid of the RA in exchange for the i3! Its makes Common sense as the updates are free and updated both buy the general public and from what i understand extracted co-ordinates from updates for devices such as the RA and b2 etc. So you get the best of both worlds! This on top of the ease of use and having a sat nav aswell!!
The i3 alerts you by an audio ding alert! This is accompained by an onscreen warning of the type of camera and the speed limit at which it is set. The i3 continues to warm you with the audio alert until you reduce your speed to the forth coming speed limit zone. The i3 uses csv files which can be added to or modified with excel. That file also controls the proximity distance at which you will be alerted to any camera's etc. You can also choose not to have the alerts on by switching the proximity setting off.
For the price (one off payment) , size and ease of use i cant see that theres a better product.
