Wiring Help...

Can anyone explain how to hard wire my tomtom system into the car's electrical system.

I want to do away with having the cigarette adapter plugged in, so basically want to hard wire into the back of the cigarette socket.

Does anyone know?

if uve got a hard wired kit the easiest way i find is to take yer stereo out get the switched power cable usually the red , then find a earth and use that.
you could use the cables from your existing lighter socket , and wire them using either the screw conectors like on household lights , or crimp connections

if its a standard kit with the lighter socket on end , id buy a lighter socket for a few quid, wire it up to same cables as above then cover the outside of it all in insulation tape, then just hide it behind the dash , or wherever suitable

Not sure this is the correct way but...

Could possibly split the red/yellow wires on the headunit wires and run one to the tomtom?

surely hardwireing to the cig lighter would require the cig lighter to be depressed all the time?

its got a standard fag plug socket on the end at the moment, which im planning on cutting off...

just wondered where the best place to splice it to... and if i would need to fuse it?

with some units its best not to remove the fag lighter end , as it could contain a resister, i know some speed detectors specifically warn u on this , and say add another socket

RSi Dave
nop the fag socket would nee to be pressed as u would creats a paralel circuit and not a looped one

if u cut the end off yer a fuse would be needed

Fubar dont cut the end off ! that fag end regulates the power to the tomtom unit.

Drop me a message on MSN will guide you thru the process.
