wont go into gear.

Well after a week of whining in all gears I think my box has given up.

Wont go into any gear apart from 5th and neutral.

feels expensive Lol.

Just checked the linkage all appears to be fine.

Would a knackered box cause this?

Box off starts wed, hopefully I can get a clutch for cheap from a trader on here.

Ah right, I thought it could be that but my gearbox whine I've had for the last few weeks only happened with the clutch up and in gear, I was under the impression a that was more likely a bearing in the box.

Knowing my luck its probably both Lol.

Suppose I'll have to order a new clutch either way and I'll find out what once the box is off.

I was hoping it was going to be just the linkage but everything seems to be OK there.

If the noise goes when clutch pressed its the release bearing so hopefully just that and new clutch.

Does it make a difference that it won't go into gear even with the engine off? And neutral is only half as long as usual, I can't even move the stick to the left to attempt 4th 3rd 2dn 1st or reverse.

I know when the clutch and bearing were shot on my 307 it would go into gear with the engine off just not on.

You don't need the clutch to select gear really, get under the car and move the linkage, one or 2 gears might be troublesome to get into but only because its not rotating.

OK I'll give that another try tonight with the linkage disconnected.

Do I push the selector up for first and second?

The aa man who toed me home tried it and couldn't get any gear apart from 5th.

Cheers mate.

I'll take a look after work. I'm praying its just the linkage or clutch and bearing. Can't afford 300 for a box refurb!

Well after a bit of fiddling under the care with the selector it will now go into 4th and 5th. I took a pic, does anything look a miss with the selector? The clutch seems to engage and disengage fine in 4th and 5th

It looks fine but a bit mucky ;). Try to select all gears by moving the selector arm with your hand. Can you select 5th, 4th but cannot 3rd? Can you push up the selector arm (preselect R, 1st and 2nd gears)? In which gears cannot you turn the selector arm?

5th and 4th can be easily selected by hand or by the gear stick.

3Rd I would have though is just the opposite way from 4th but the selector just won't move that way at all.

I can't even move the selector up to even attempt 1 2 and r. It just feels like its hit something

Well after taking off the linkage and tapping the selector with a hammer the box is working perfectly again...

Wtf!

Does this mean the selector inside the box is probably on its way out then?

Done a fair few miles now and all seems well. No idea what was wrong there. Still got the annoying whine to try and find now. arrrg

I don't exactly know what it is but does the whine stop when clutch is dipped?

Be prepared for something to let go if you don't find it soon lol

I've said before, clutch release bearing. Get it changed as it'll take clutch with it too.

Cheers Danny, I'm ordering a clutch tomorrow anyway so I'll get it fitted next week hopefully.

Only thing worrying me is the clips holding the subframe nuts in place snapping off and allowing the bolt to spin.

I always take it all out of the top as I find it easier. Can do it in two hours so isn't much difference time wise.

I bet the linkage but underneath was nipped up and it moved position. After you took it apart and put it back together it works.
