simple then, stick one end in the 360 the other in the modem...go into the system settings on the 360, test network settings and your away...(hopefully)

ive done this but nothing happens. I've plugged the modem into the xbox via USB and then from the modem to the phone socket. The modem lights up ok but the xbox still says no connect detected

no, you need an adsl router :

phone line > adsl router > network cable to pc > internet on PC

adsl router > network cable to 360 > xbox live

(or wireless router, but will need wireless adapter for 360)

dont i even need my modem then?

if you have a USB modem then all you can do with that is plug it into 1 PC, so for example, if you wanted to connect a second PC to the internet, you can't. Plugging the USB modem into the back of your 360 will do nothing, the 360 doesn't have the ability to guess your ISP and username and logon. Therefore, what you need to do is purchase an ADSL modem router, this is an all in one device that will allow you to connect to the Internet and usually has atleast 4 network connections on it, therefore you can connect up to 4 devices (i.e 3 PCs and the 360 or whatever). Wireless will obviously allow you to distance the 360 and connect even more devices (but as said you will need a wireless device for the 360 to connect). ** If you go for the ADSL modem router option you'll need to make sure any PCs you want to connect have a network card **

Right 2 easiest options are either a) buy an adsl router or b) by a router and link up your original modem... me personally would buy a adsl router.

Here is a diagram of how it links up

thats how it would be if you buy a normal router with your modem plugging into it.

If you bought an adsl router you would have the 1 box going straight from the phone line into it and then from there to your pc and xbox.

difference is Linksys wont disconnect much like cheaper products do, i dont know the speed of the ethernet on the cheaper one too.

The other might do the job ok but personally i would spend that little bit more

you should be able to plug upto for devices into it but they will only connect from an ethernet cable which they usually supply 1 with the modem

best thing do is go in overclockers in fenton explain what you want and how much you want spend and they will sort you out.
