Yozza and mot

Do they normally pass or fail? got mine coming up soon, was told by my local mechanic that it's down to the MOT person weather or not it passes or fails. Was just after others experiences with this. Cheers.
 
Technically it is illegal to modify an exhaust system to be louder than standard, so any aftermarket exhaust should fail.

People often quote tales of cars passing without a cat etc, you never know how much this is the fact they turn a blind eye or it genuinely passes, I find it very unlikely.

There Was a similar thread a few days ago.
 
Tbh my first Clio was louder than a yozza and My garage is pretty anal but still passed it. Just told mr it's a bit loud and be careful around the fuzz.

my yozza has passed through the mot 3 times with no mention what so ever.

Yozza with cat is fine, Yozza with a decat is a fail, unless you give the Mot tester some £££'s
 
Because it's louder than standard and technically that's a fail. Though I have never known anyone get more than an advisory for it.

I think that, if that truely is a law (sounds dubious), it's out dated and not applied. I've never even heard of that and in my 10 years of driving, loads of different MoT testers and cars with consistently noisey exhausts, no one has ever mentioned anything about that.

b. assess subjectively the effectiveness of the silencer in reducing exhaust noise to a level considered to be average for the vehicle

REASON FOR REJECTION
b. a silencer in such a condition, or of* such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition

If it's an mot failure, it makes the car not road worthy and therefore illegal.

That's not my interpretation at all - it's about reasonableness of volume level and not the fact that it's louder than standard, this allows for prof judgement, it's clearly not a black and white law like you've made out. If it was as clear cut as that, do you not think there would be alot more fails for volume and a great deal more press about it.

Tbf - if an exhaust is above that limit, you're right - however, it appears that, that isn't in the mot law so it seems a blurring of lines. So to get an mot it has no impact - unless there is further additional rules on mot not in the first link. But can be complained about.

As said, at tester's discretion. My Saxo failed at one MOT station and that was before i put the manifold on. They were overly fussy there though, never been back since.

Other than that one place i've never had a problem with MOT's and after market exhausts.
 
It does strike me as a massive grey area with seemingly contradictory language used. It's also made a mockery of by super cars and motorbikes being far louder "off the peg" than many cars running modded exhausts.
