It's quite a good video :)

If you put the camera on the very front of the car the ITB's drown out the wind noise and you get a really loud bark. I had my big standard tow eye/bar on and attached the camera to that. There's a video on YouTube, something like "ITB'd 182 b-road blast"

Ah, nice one mate - thanks for the suggestion. I just checked out the vid on YouTube (which is cool) and the camera position works well! Can't wait to get out and give it a try to be honest...

Cheers Dan... I won't tell if you don't...

I was hoping to get some additional footage on the way home from work this evening / tonight but I've left the bl00dy battery at home. A pillock I am.

Well... if ever you are in the South Wales area then drop me a PM beforehand... Sadly I don't have much to do with the Rebel guys anymore due to a few misunderstandings but they do do good drives and are a sensible bunch. Of course, you are still more than welcome to join me and my new club for a jaunt around the hills if you wish. :D

Have a job in south wales!! :rasp:

Hows the air filter story coming along
Ain't that the truth, Marc! Damned weather!

Oh yes, the filter. The damn, crappy PoS filter. *sigh* I'm still awaiting the delivery of a new and better item and hopefully this should be with me very soon. Ultimately I'm still looking to get the aircon removed (to allow a better fitting filter married to a custom backplate) but this takes pennies and I'm still saving; hence a temporary filter will be going on soon to replace the substandard item already on there.

Talking of substandard, the filter is pulling itself apart and I don't think there'll be much left of it soon. No word of a lie, I'm having to clean the trumpets and assembly practically every f'ing week and God knows how much crap has been sucked in. And I'm only generally doing commuting miles at the moment whereby the Trophy doesn't get hammered (it's only 6 miles to work and not enough opportunity to warm her up properly). In addition to this the foam 'bumpers' are not really doing their thing and the filter (even at moderate revs/loads) is sucked onto the trumpets and compromising the airflow. Not happy at all. Whilst I'm happy I went down the ITB route (which is something I was always going to do) I wish I'd gone straight to TDF for the install. Would have saved me thousands (quite literally). Apologies for the rather terse reply but I'm still mroe than a bit p!ssed off. LOL!

But it's not all bad; the car is driving much better, sounds and feels healthy and is a rapid little bugger.

Anyways, enough of my woes. How is your Cup mate and how are the ITB's on your setup?

  TrackCar & F30 330d
Its simply not good enough that ktec sell a filter which is so poor, and letting customers cars be the test mules.

This video shows what we mean when the filter is sucked onto the end of the trumpets. Yes it's the older Pipercross filter in the vid which was recalled but its fitted the same way the ITG filter is and has the same effect.

Look at the left side of the filter when i change gear as 16 seconds

Oh, shame about the Rebel situ Andy.

What's the deal with the new club?
Yes, it's definitely a shame mate but these things happen. Still, it's a good club with some good people and friends on there.

As for the new club, I've literally just launched a new site and hope to get a few members soon. Once of a reasonable size I have plans/contacts for various trackday events as well as supporting events like Castle Combe Action Days, etc. by having a club stand. The usual stuff basically. I wanted to do this because it's something I enjoy, something I'm enthusiastic about (performance cars) and I enjoy dabbling with technology, websites, graphic design and so on. So why not, eh? :D But... I'm NOT a geek. My better half agrees. She just says I'm, "enthusiastic about technology...."

Thanks for posting up the vid mate. Firstly, that raw barking sound is fantastic and secondly it shows EXACTLY the issue I'm talking about. As you've proved in your video, it doesn't take much at all to suck in the filter and thus disrupt the airflow into the trumpets. Very poor in my opinion.

recognise the roads from watching the video , didnt realsie you are so local to me lol
Hello fellow local CS'er! Despite you having a LY 182 I can't recall having seen one around here... do you travel those roads regularly? I nearly bought a LY 182 to accopmany the Trophy on the driveway; LY is a great colour.

That's good mate - I'm just glad that all is well with your setup and hopefully will remain so. Say "hello" for me. :D

If ever you're over this way and/or have a free weekend then give me a shout and we'll try and sort something out. Regarding the new club, you'd be more than welcome to join. As I say, it is very early days but hopefully things will blossom given a bit of time and when word has spread. Whatever happens, it would indeed be good to catch up at some point. :D

i think i need a ride in marcs to compare lol :D still a soft spot for the cup...
Aye - Marc's Cup looks and sounds the business. Get your lazy ass out of the German pashunvagen and get into a proper car... ;) I do like your pashunvagen though; 'tis tidy.

anything new with the trophy? amazing read and credit to you for sticking through with it!
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the read. At this very moment in time I don't have anything of note to add. I *almost* decided to get the aircon removed and new cams... ...but then decided against it as I've been in my new pad since last December and still haven't bought a bed or sofa...! As a result I was 'gently persuaded' by my better half to purchase some furniture and to leave the car as is for a little while. Pah! :D

Have you got your new filter on yet?
Sadly not, mate. I've been away with work and since being back have not yet had a reply back from Matt. Thankfully the car hasn't been run all that much but I'm now dying to get out for some weekend blasts so will be getting this sorted asap. In the meantime I'm simply having to remove the filter regularly and give the trumpets a clean. I met up with a few friends recently for a bite to eat and, with them being petrolheads, they wanted to see and hear the ITB's running. I popped open the bonnet and gace a couple of presses... and I tell you what, the filter is now even worse than before in terms of being sucked into the trumpets! Mind you, you know only too well how poor it is! Anyhows, I'm hoping I can get this sorted asap and will drop Matt another e-mail or call later. As far as I am aware it's ready to ship out and has been for a few weeks so fingers crossed.

Apologies if you've already seen these videos... just wanted to post them in this thread in an attempt to keep things together! :D

The main reason for grabbing the video footage was in making an attempt to capture the sound of the ITB's. The first video below didn't work out so well (still too much wind noise) so I added a dodgy soundtrack... which I now regret!

This second video, whilst on local (boring) roads, is a much better attempt at capturing the sound. Thanks to chrispy and a few other folks I mounted the camera right next to the trumpets and tried again (as well as adding a bit of 2-ply tissue over the microphone to act as a pikey filter... which probably had zero effect!)

When I get the cameras back I'll be out again as I have had a couple of folks asking for more video/audio of the exhaust.

You'd be better of just saucing the backing plate and filter yourself, sod waiting months for an air filter when the one your running is so rubbish.

Reverie can cut the holes in one of their backing plates and dan from 519 automotive can get you the correct air filter you need within a few days.

August 2011

It's been a while so time for a little update...

Over the last few weeks I have noticed that the Trophy hasn't quite been running as well or smoothly. Sure, it is still much better than it used to be pre-ITB's but something isn't quite "there" at the moment. On top of that the idle has become a little lumpy and, under partial throttle, the drive has also become considerably more lumpy. After asking around it would seem likely that there could well be a faulty sensor and/or the ITB's are in need of balancing...

Even so, I decided to take it along to a rolling road day that was held recently at Circuit Motors, Castle Combe. I was invited by Russ / BSE Motorsport and thought I might as well pop along. I wasn't expecting great results and - to be honest - I was disappointed later in the day when I got my results. More details on that later.

As things currently stand I am still running the filter that came with the ITB's. I have been asking around and looking for solutions from various places but correspondence has got nowhere and/or places don't currently have anything available that can help?! To be honest it's a bit frustrating as I'm still not happy running this filter and the following photos show why. This is the build-up of disintegrating foam after only 4-5 weeks of use.

Just a couple of other quick photos... You can see the slight oil seepage I'm experiencing from the rocker cover but this hasn't become anymore serious and is just annoying more than anything. I'll look to get this fixed and sealed properly soon.

20110827_04.jpg

20110827_06.jpg

The good news is that there looks to be a new two-piece filter solution on the way soon so fingers crossed that arrives sooner rather than later. This is being developed and supplied by K-Tec, from whom I'll also soon be acquiring the GEN Tuner Light software and connector cable for their GEN90 ECU.

So... what of the dyno day? What was I expecting? Having had my Trophy remapped by Matt at TDF I was looking for somewhere around about the same figure I'd got on TDF's dyno (although I appreciate dyno's can and do differ significantly). Even taking into account a potential considerable difference in dyno calibration I couldn't help but feel disappointed with the eventual results. The images below show the story of the dyno day.

dyno1-data.png

As can be seen in the image above, the Trophy only managed to pull just shy of 190bhp and a rather poor 154 lbft of torque. Whilst the bhp was a litte disappointing the torque figure was extremely disappointing! Driving the car suggests that the actual torque level is somewhat higher but obviously I can't say for sure!

dyno1-graph.png

The image above shows the results of the 4 power runs. By the time the 3rd and 4th runs were being done the engine temperature was extremely high; seemingly the ITB kit I'm running pumps out some serious heat! Whilst the lines aren't too bad the power does seem to peak a little early before dropping off (whereas I'd have expected it to keep pulling) and the torque does appear low.
Looking further into the results...

dyno2-fhp.png

dyno2-whp.png

dyno2-trq.png

The above images simply show (again) the power at the fly and the wheel, as well as the torque.

dyno2-afr.png

The afr is interesting. The dyno operator stated that it was difficult to get a good reading what with the dual exit exhaust but it does appear to be running a little lean in places. As it doesn't seem too bad in terms of real world driving and performance I am not going to worry about getting a remap until I get my next planned round of mod's sorted out.

Later in the afternoon, Russ kindly offered his time and the use of his garage facilities so that I could check over some 'issues' that I believe I'm having with the car. Especially useful seeing as my MOT was all but upon me.

The first thing I wanted to get checked out was an oil leak; it was making a bit of a mess in the engine bay and on the underside of the car yet it wasn't obvious where it was coming from. It wasn't the leak that I'd seen from the rocker cover.

20110827_07.jpg

20110827_08.jpg

After a while Russ found the problem... the oil breather pipe wasn't actually connected! As a result oil was simply seeping down through the engine bay and spraying up and along the underside of the car. Messy.

20110827_11.jpg

Next up was that old familiar friend... the CV boots. Yet again the CV boot clip had failed so it was promptly repacked with grease and re-clipped. Hopefully this will last a little longer as it's the 4th time it's been done. They really are a poor design (or so it would seem).

20110827_09.jpg

The other major issue I've been having recently is with the handling. Or rather with the crashy suspension. I suspected it was due to the fact that the Sachs needed refurbing. Even so the driveshafts, etc. were checked just in case. Fortunately everything else seemed to be in order, although I did notice this (above) where a bush appears to be popping out the driveshaft? Is this normal or does anyone recognise it as a problem that needs fixing?

20110827_10.jpg

The other thing that was found was the perished lower gearbox mount; which can be seen clearly in the photo above. This will be fixed soon along with a few other things.

So where am I planning on going from here? Well, clearly there are a few things that need addressing. Firstly, the oil breather issue is a nuisance but thankfully Russ came up with a solution that works perfectly well for now. The Samco pipe has been 'fused' with a slightly smaller diameter piping section that better fits. The oil breather itself has also been relocated to a different part of the engine bay such that there is no longer an unpleasant smell in the cabin when using the heaters, etc.

Secondly, the Sachs dampers. I threw my keys to Russ so that he could take the Trophy out for a spin; thought it would be a good idea to get his opinion on how he thinks it's driving performance-wise (bearing in mind my disappointing dyno result earlier in the day) and also the crashy suspension. He returned later with a grin and confirmed that there wasn't too much wrong with the performance... as a rather annoyed M3 driver found out. :p However, he did agree that it was very likely the dampers were in need of a refurb.

Finally, future modifications. I have decided to go down the uprated cam route and plan to save up and get some Schricks installed as soon as funds allow. I also still intend to get the aircon removed, too.

A few questions in case anyone might be able to help...

Where is the best place to get the Sachs refurbed and can someone give me an indication on price (including getting them unpinned?)

Aircon removal. Are there any reputable specialists that do this as I don't have the time, tools or facilities to buy an aircon delete kit and risk doing it myself!

Schricks... recommendations for places to look for purchasing them new?

As always, thanks for reading. Oh, and the car passed its MOT today... although it took a while to get through the emissions test!!!

Blimey your not having much luck with the T ?!

You can get the dampers done at BG motorsport at Silverstone and think its around £500 maybe a bit more to fit new adjusters when its unpinned.(Loads of info on cliotrophy)

Puremotorsport sell and fit the aircon removal stuff not sure on Schricks though.

Please, please please get that awful filter of death off there asap!! As you can see, god only knows whats being sucked in there ...

Re: the Sachs, BG Motorsport do it, about £500 all in inc. de-pinning from memory. And PMS sell the aircon delete, mine was supplied/fitted by JMS, but not sure if the new owners will be offering a similar service, but im sure any reputable specialist should be able to fit it.

And finally, you are very unlucky, especially after the money you've poured into this thing!! Have TDF given any comment on the issues as of yet?
