1.2 mk2 fan not coming on?

had the car 4 months never heard it come on only needed it once or twice but scary the temperature lights come on 2 twice because it hasnt cut in, took it to a garage they tried bridging it with wire which aparantly should have brought it in, the fuses are fine any other ideas why??

Had this on my old 1.2, just un-plug the thermo stat with the car running & if the fan comes on then its faulty, If i remeber correctly its the plug to the right below the inlet manifold, think it has 3 wires coming out of it... & i'm assuming you have a mk2 ph1 1.2 8v - Engine D7f

theyv had it unpluged while running and didnt come on, any more ideas he wanted to find the relay for it or something? would it just be the thermostat not the fan?
