Any suggestions as to how he can make the ride smoother?

I'm selling up because the Clio cannot cope with our roads, it skips, bump steers and generally feels unstable unless it's a good road.
The car isn't broken, the dampers are responsive and the springs are in one piece, they (and I presume it is the suspension - it is the most likely suspect) simply cannot keep it together on our roads.
That is exactly my Dilema, Phil.
If changing the suspension works, it'll almost certainly save me money. Not only on the purchase price of the other cars I'd consider, but all the niggles that would need doing, that you get on any second hand car (of which, have already been addressed on the Clio).
I just need to figure out if I can accurately assess whether it will work or not.
