Blu-ray starting to gain serious momentum with Dark Knight! (p.s. i'm not Batman)

Current number one movie disc at amazon.com is the dark knight blu-ray, even beating its dvd version, now thats a real turn of the cards!

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/dvd/ref=pd_ts_d_bcrm_dvd

Looks like cheaper blu-ray players (sony S350 can currently be got for £150 with 5 top blu-rays!) and more PS3 sales have made this a real contendor, especially with everyone owning a HDTV nowadays its the obvious choice.

Not the white elephant people thought it was going to be.

And while we are on the subject, has anyone got the dark knight BD?

its absolutely amazing, especially the IMAX scenes, some people are complaining about the change in aspect ratio through the film but I couldn't care less, you hardly notice it except for the fact that the full scenes look absolutely amazing!

  SLK 350
Watched it at IMAX when it came out, was like £14 or something but it was awesome. For anybody that's not been, the screen is 5 double-decker buses high!

Few months ago a BD would cost you £20, now thanks to the crunch, if you shop around you can get them for little more than a DVD.

WANT!! One of best films i've seen for a while, Can't wait to get it on BD!! I don't have many BD's, but this is one I HAVE to have LOL!

  A4 Avant
Saw it at Imax. Was awesome, bought the bluray version for £16.99 (+4% cashback). At that price I'll be buying more of them. £20+ is just too much for them.

I'm just about to make the home switch to HD. Years ago I thought HDDVD would win over Blu-Ray, but either is good with me! I'm just looking forward to it. HD content makes DVDs look like VHS, which is quite scary considering DVDs made VHS look like...well...something really really bad :D

I'll definitely be getting this movie as a first watch. All being well, I'll be setup by the end of next week :approve:

EDIT: wohoo! I'll also be able to run hdmi from my laptop to my new telly, and watch my HD US shows in 42" instead of on a 17" laptop in Germany somewhere  (sorry for going a bit off-topic)

or you could get a PS3 and kill two birds with one stone, great blu-ray player and play all your 720p tv as a media server or usb hard drive like i do.

The equivalent sony Blu-ray player is the S550 and its £250 + most places, PS3 is only a few pennies more and decodes all the HD sound internally and then pumped out by hdmi to an amp, what more could you want?

Thing is David, and please don't think I'm being a cnut, because I'm serious - I hate the PS3 controller so much I don't think I'd use it for games, so I may as well get a player IMO :)

My amp doesn't have HDMI - I really need to look into this, as I don't really want to change my amp if I can help it...see my other thread for info :)

Im considering buying a player. Mainly for Batman TBH.

Ive bought it for my step-dad for Christmas.

Dave, you got a link to it for £150 with 5 films? Although id prefer a Samsung one so it matches

hmmm, ok, depending on your amp then, you need the S550 as that has the 8 analogue outputs for an amp which doesn't support HDMI and it does internal Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD MA decoding.

Ja. I've also reached this conclusion now through google :)

I'm getting the Panasonic BD55 though, as it also has the full analogue outputs :)

Oh poopsie. I've just realised that none of these Blu Ray players are going to spin my non-region 2 DVDs. I have circa 400 DVDs, and at least half of those are not region 2. They're a mix of 1,2,3 & 4, so even if I sourced a US player, I'd be screwed on my other discs.

Oh well onwards & upwards :)

I use a PS3 for Blu Ray and the quality is fantastic, my old man has had a Sony & samsung standaone (unsure of models) but we both agree the PS3 looks better, hence he has gone back to the PS3.

I use the PS3 for Blu Ray and a Popcorn A110 for HD downloads. Dark Knight is simply stunning!

do I have to do everything for you, I should be a personal shopper;)

first post, think its the same for both models, but if not then there are threads on how to do it, can easily be done so no loss, its only for dvd regions though, not blu-ray

The PS3 is the best player around ihmo, After all, that is where BD came from... I had massive arguements with friends who believed HD-DVD was the future, but they soon realised, and all now have one as a result. I'll be honest and say that I have only seen a couple of BD's (Spiderman and Casino Royale), but when you see them on a standalone, they just don't seem to have the same appeal, and i'm only on a 720p TV. Sounds pretty good to, i'm running sound through the HDMI to the TV, then Optics to the Home Cinema. Out of interest what's this Popcorn?

EDIT: DVD Region Senario. Is that not simply a case of running an update disc to unlock the restrictions?

  SLK 350
Roy, just get a PS3 - If you don't want it for gaming, then just buy a BD remote. The fact it's fully upgradable profile wise is a winner, plus you've got all the media streaming capabilities.

As for your multi-region, I'd just strip the protection and reburn them if you're bothered about them.

the thing is that the ps3 benefits from constant firmware updates to improve things, something that first generation standalone players did not have the beauty of.

The second generation though are much better, reducing loading times from something stupid like up to a minute to 6 seconds and now having ethernet firmware updates and supporting profile 2.0 etc, they are now much better!

the new BD players are also fully firmware upgradable, you plug them into your router for the LIVE features and FW updates.

Plus, Roy has an issue with owning an older amp that doesn't have HDMI so he needs the analogue outputs to enable onboard processing of the HD sound, the PS3 does this but only over HDMI so his amp would by useless unless he wanted to stick with DD, but if you are doing it properly and upgrading the picture, might as well upgrade the sound at the same time and a £200 BD player will cover all the bases and be region free for DVD's which is not an option with the PS3.

You know how much I like the PS3 but in this case its not the right product for him unless he wants to invest in a new amp and burn all his dvd's again to be able to play them.

Nah dont need to use Torents. Either rip your current content or download HD content from wherever your fav source is. It has a built in Newgroup and Torrent client but I havent used it yet. You can read data from a PC, NAS, USB drive or fit an Internal drive.

Have a look on the forums in the link above. Very versatile system. This will pass through HD audio as well Munson!

I know the Munson and he isnt going to want to strip the region coding and protection from each and every DVD. Simply not worth it. Redownload or use an existing player?

Good idea about ripping them. I can't use a PS3, because I want the option of HD audio (if I decide to use it) and my amp doesn't have HDMI.

David, thanks for the link :)

EDIT: woops, missed a few posts  Indeed, the PS3 is not an option for me. I'm not about to dump my amplifier for the sake of HDMI, when all I need is a player with decoded analogue multi-channel outs. The DVD issue isn't that big, as I can rip them as and when I encounter problems.

Ah, In which case I stand corrected... I haven't really looked into the subject any further, since the fact I don't really need too. But if that is indeed the case, then fair do's. I do agree with the Hoff though... at the end of the day! The PS3 would work incredably well as a standalone media player, easily uprateable to just a standard 2.5" HDD

Will be buying the BD double pack of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight from Asda later this week, £29 for both is a bargain.

PS3 + New amp.

You can get a HDMI amp from Richersounds for silly money, if you sold your own kit it's not that dear. Plus you KNOW you're going to be happy down the line unless you know you're getting all BD offers. HDMI is here to stay, and it's a £10 cable.

You also know if you want to pop a game in, you can. And as already said, if you want to stream media to it...you can! One box, many (ever expanding) options.

Looking at £400 for the lot.

BTW I know about the upgradable players, but until they make a wireless one, it's a faff. Not sure about you but my router isn't next to my AV stuff, to unplug it all...naaa. Don't get me wrong the PS3 isn't the best player around anymore if only looking at PQ and SQ, but you need to be spending a fair chunk to better it.

Thanks, but I really don't need or want a new amp. I know enough about AV/Hi-Fi to know that amplification and speakers probably haven't changed much in terms of outright fidelity since 2002. Of course, the decoders and formats probably have, hence the reason for buying a player with analogue outs, so all my amp has to do is amplify them - and it's very good at doing that :)

Quality 2002 seperates are going to sound abolutely fine, that much I do know. You know, there was such a thing as good sound quailty in AV & Hi-Fi before HD and the PS3 came along ;)

The kit I have, has great dynamics, fantastic LFE, serious detail, and is capable of loosening fillings on demand. Hooked up through analogues from a good Blu Ray player, it'll be more than up to the job :)

You're missing my point, I'm just offering a different perspective on your position with FA knowledge of your current setup...so you'll have to forgive me for making assumptions.

You'll go which ever way you choose, but a £200 HDMI amp would give you greater flexibility in the long term than one only offering analogue connections.

LOL @ Hoff, he can't help plugging the PS3 in any situation;)

For his situation, its got to be the standalone player, it makes sense. They can be conencted to a wireles media adapter, it shows it in the manual, so he could make it wireless if he wanted anyway, no biggy.

Plus, Roy's a keyboard and mouse man..........

Oh and £200 isn't going to buy that good an amp really, the cheapest Sony one at the moment is about £220!
