Clio 1.2 16v Toxic Gas warning light

A friends clio 1.2 16v (2003) has just shown a warning light which the manual says is a toxic gas warning light. Any ideas what could cause this, is it safe to drive and also are renault the only place who could hook their box of tricks in to see what the problem is or do the likes of the AA/RAC have access to this?

yeah just means the llamda sensor is most likely on the way out

comes on in mine all the time.

means the 2nd sensor is not realing LESS than the 1st, therefore no catalytic conversion is taking place.
