Clio Cup 200 - Buying advise?

  Clio 200
Hi All,
Coming over from the VAG world Mrs had a TT and looks like we'll be doing a deal on a Clio Cup 200.
This one has 46K from a Garage up north, just wondered if there is anything I should be particularly looking out for in terms of service history and anything I need to look out for?
This is a 2010 60 plate Cup in White and has 46K - It's for my Mrs so just want to make sure its not a lemon!
Thanks
Jason

Gearbox is number one, make sure it's smooth and not clunky or grinding when going into gear.

Also belts should be done if it's 60 plate. Normally around £500 job if they haven't been done.

Oh and in my personal experience is ball joints, check for any play in the front wheels or a small creaking noise.

Apart from them mate, there pretty awesome cars! I've gone from a 200 to a ST and I'd be lieing if I said I didn't miss the thing.

timing belt due, check the sticky on here about timing belts before agreeing any deal with the garage to have it done etc, id always want money off to have it done myself!

blowing exhaust manifold flexis due to worn engine mounts, expensive repair!
gearbox crunching high up the revs mainly into 3rd and 4th requiring gearbox rebuild

On the 200's if every 6 years. A specialist said to me he's never seen one go on all the Renault sport 200's he's seen but it's always a just incase in my eyes.

Yep 6 years or 72,000 miles on a 200

Exhaust flexis are a huge pain in the arse, I would reccomend changing the engine mounts when you get one in order to prolong the manifolds life even if it's showing no signs.

The big question though is are you Jason from the gadget show??? :tongueout:

Haha. I've not lost my hair yet!
Looks like I'm doing a deal on Sunday with a 60 plate with 47k on it, cambelt not done. Would you recommend doing it ASAP?

I would get it done yes and preferably by a recommended tuner/trader on here depending on where you are from.

Make sure you get some money knocked off if it hasnt been done. As said, it's an important job and not exactly cheap at £500+

Jason where is this car? You want someone who knows their stuff to look it over mate. The gearbox is the issue and correct servicing!

So I sacked that one above off in the end. What do you think about these 3, 1 cheaper than the other 2. I looked at the cheaper one today but bodywork was a bit ropey.
Any of these stand out more to you than others?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, coming from VAG im new to Frenchies!

Just trying to get the best spec out of the box I can really, Recaros a must and not a full cup as you lose the A/C electric mirrors etc.
Thanks

For me it would be the first one on that list. Just the overall look of the car is nicer plus the way it is presented and mileage would be a winner for. Fair enough it is a little more costly but that would be the first i would look at.

I have had a couple of 200s and I'm only 13 miles away so if you need a second set of eye just ask.

Other small things to check for would be the rear window rubber cracking where the door shuts on it, oil leaking from rocker cover bolts. Worn ball joints, normally you get a knocking from the front end and a squeaking noise when turning. With the Recaros just keep and eye on the seat bolster as they take a lot of damage if you are not careful when getting in and out.

Just a quick picture of the leaks they get from the bolts on the rocker cover. Nothing major and normally sorted by resealing the bolt but could get you a couple of £s off.

Just done a quick check on the first one, looks like the ball joint is on its way out and can be quite costly.

As for the last one i would avoid it, in 2015 it failed its mot on offside rear bodywork being damaged along with the tyre so it looks like it has taken a knock.

Thanks for taking the time to look at those, the last one I noticed terrible paint on both rear arches. It was real orange peeley looked like a mobile job to me.
In regards to the ball joint issue what are we talking cost wise to fix that issue?
Thanks again
Jason

Thanks for that, going to view the lower mileage one tonight. Will see how it drives, as it's quite new I only really need to be checking it cosmetically and the gearbox I guess?
Out of interest coming for VAG a 9K Clio sport - Depreciation would be pretty high I would imagine? Doesn't really bother me too much as would plan to keep it for a while anyway.

  Clio 200
Also am I right in saying the 11 plate 33K miles is a FF Cup - The other one which is a 12 plate 45K from what I'm reading it doesnt have the red brembo calipers so it's not a cup just a sport?

With the pearl white paint I would have a good look over the condition of the paint as it will be a nightmare to colour match. As for the gearbox, with the engine off just sit and go through the the gears. I never had any problems with the 2 I owned but I did go to look at another and it was very notchy going from 3rd to 4th so walked away.

As for the depreciation, it has started to slow now. I lost 9k on my first one in 2 and a half years. If they go anything like the 197 it will be worth about 5-6k in 3 years.

The lower mileage car is a 200 with cup pack. So you will have all the good bits inside like ac, CD player with USB port, Bluetooth and maybe even the renault monitor if it was spec'd. With the cup pack you get a faster steering rack, 7mm drop with increased dampening and red calipers.

Thanks for all your replies really appreciate the help, nothing worse than going into buying a car blind!
Was hoping it may have had the cup chassis too but I'm guessing not, will see what deal I can get and go from there hopefully everything is at should be.

Well looks like I'm going for the pearl white one, deposit to be left tonight. Not sure I can do any more research on it, got a bit cheaper in the end
