Hi guys,

Just fitted a crank seal to a motor last night and think I may have pushed it to far in, will it still seal properly when it's level with the surface of the carrier?

Look in icemans thread for his 182. He pissed around for ages trying to get his to stop leaking from the rear main crank seal and there's a fair few pictures on there of how it should be fitted. Hope that helps.

A lot of the leaks people get are from not getting the sealant correct on the cap when you put it back in, did you make sure you cleaned it out thoroughly and then really make sure its full of sealant when it went back?

They seem to love a leak these engines even if you are fairly careful sadly!

The end cap main make sure for goodness sake you use highy quality sealer... and not cheap and nastu black silicone. We use three bond

It was definitely leaking from the seal it was obvious as the only rear wet area was directly under the crank leading from the seal. Im still not convinced about this seal though, ive done some measuring and the seal is going to be pretty close to the back of the sealing surface from what i can see. Its on a friends car so i dont want him to put it all back together and find it leaks again.

How much we talking if the crank seal has failed to get sorted?

Cheers Guys?

If its the seal itself as opposed to the joint between the cap and the block then you are looking at a lot of money as its going to require the flywheel off, so either engine and box out and seperate (better for access) or sump off and gearbox off.

Only place that springs to mind in yorkshire really is RS Tuning, but they are at the dear end of the market generally I believe.

Mick at Diamond motors isnt a million miles away in nottingham?

Unless you are using the car particularly hard like racing it on ITBS or turboing it there really isnt any point upgrading the clutch TBH

Great stuff, its been looked at today so lets have crossed fingers it isnt major, but there is alot of oil which aint good!!!

  Renault Clio 182
if its the crank seal how much oil we talking? only seems leak badly if engine been running?

the oil runs more or less half the underneath of the drivers side

Depends how badly gone it is.

only seems leak badly if engine been running?

hot oil is thinner
crankcase pressure when the engine is running (especially when working hard) encourages it to find leaks
if its leaking between crank and seal then the crank spinning increases the chance of leaks

Right guguys seems like its my crank seal that's gone, mechanic says its either that or leaking cylinder head, either way I only just bought the car and don't need this!!!!

now yorkshire lads I need help to get this sorted?

cant really drive the car either due to the severe leak?

If its been bought in the last 6 months and was from a trader I'd contact them about it.

I dont see how your mechanic can be unsure if its the head or the cam seal though, should be easy to clean it up above the box and see if it runs down there or not.

Well exactly what is wrong is that you have an oil leak, thats as exact as anyone can be without more details about where the oil actually is coming from, if even the mechanic looking at it wasnt sure the first thing you need to do like I said is clean it all up so you get a better idea of where its leaking.

If you are REALLY lucky it will be the camshaft oil seals, as they are a piece of cake to fix, or the oil strainer at the back of the head is easy too.

If its rocker cover seal its a big job (cambelt off to do it) and if its crankshaft then its a big job too (gearbox off).

So guys it looks like it is the crank seal after all, is there anything else I should have done while all the belts are off?

Hi Guys

finally stripped off at the garage and needs crank seal all new timing belt, dephaser etc.... can oil leak from the dephaser as im been told there is play and oil leaking?

also please can anyone point me in the direction of the full kit including dephaser, aux belt and crank seal?

Regards

It can leak from the camseal behind the dephasor if not correctly fitted, not seen it leak from the dephasor itself.

Which crank seal is it leaking from?
Its normally the gearbox end which is nowhere near the belt!

Renault for the parts, im not aware of anyone else making a dephasor. (not that I believe the dehpasor itself is leaking TBH)

definatley timing end where oil is leaking, sorry about my mechanical speak been poor!

need to get all the kit ordered asap and get this on the road

I would take it to a specialist to have the work done if I were you, these cars are notorious for tripping up local garages on the cambelt timing.

HOW MUCH WOULD YOU SAY COST FOR ALL THIS DOING?

Timing Belt kit
Dephaser Pulley
Camshaft Oil Seal
Aux Drive Belt
Water Pump
Engine Oil & Filter
Crankshaft Oil Seal.
Lower Timing Cover

I reckon you are going to say something like £400 or £1800 lol. I can see this ending well.

Timing Belt kit
Dephaser Pulley
Camshaft Oil Seal - WHICH ONES?
Aux Drive Belt - KIT REQUIRED
Water Pump
Engine Oil & Filter
Crankshaft Oil Seal. - WHICH? THERE'S 2
Lower Timing Cover - THE PLASTIC COVER OR YOU MEAN THE OIL PUMP CHAIN COVER?

you need to be more precise

Not for £1500 if its got the gearbox side crank seal gone as 90% of the time it will mean clutch as well on top of that substantial list just for the engine.

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
1500 quid for a 182 that needs time consuming engine work?

i suspect you've pitched that a bit high mate.
