Flat below 4k

Just bought a phase 1 this morning which I really like. I've always shyed away from naturally aspirated cars but the clio has won me over. However it is a bit flat below 4,000 revs and worse when cold. After 4k it picks up and at 5k it comes on cam and just goes.

The previous owner decided to remove the standard airbox and fit the most awfull max power air filter ever. I have a feeling that this is at fault. Perhaps the car is getting too much air? Is this a documented problem?

the car does have dephaser rattle, so could that be part of the fault?

any other ideas?

Looks like you've answered your own question mate.

Dodgy airfilter + unhealthy engine + being N/A = not a lot below 4k

Last one I had like this, was cam timing out by a good margin.
