inlet timing out, cant fit timing tools , common?

  2005 Clio 182 FF
Is this a common issue? Im replacing the dephaser and the timing belt, I have the crank locked at TDC , the exhaust cam is lined up correctley but the inlet cam seems to be as much as 10 degrees off the centre line. Is this common? Can I just whip off the TB then re align the cams , lock them up and refit the belt and dephaser?

it's common, and no there's no shortcut. Full timign procedure needs following or what you do will end up in the same mess

shouldnt be a common issue but it is.

No doubt done previously by some one who didnt use the right procedure, and not got the cam timing right.

s**t, so obviously the TB has been changed before and Ive no reciepts or marks to prove it, so Ive spent a fortune on tooling and parts for no reason :(
Anyhow, at least I know theres a issue here with it, so I can go ahead and take the belt off without locking the cams, then deal with the timing after? How do people manage to f**k up a fairly regular maintenance item ?

read the last sentence of your first post which starts "can I just...."

Pretty much anything that starts like that will be done wrong, and is generally why these are cocked up. Shortcuts don't work

Off to the Garage manual I go! Do I have to go messing around with the cams as if you were timing them in new? I dont have the little circular degree chart that goes on the end of the cam, Ive done it on a mini before but not a 16v.

Thanks for the help, I was half wondering if it was tuned like that for some reason.

Pop it on a trailer and send it to some one who knows what they're doing. Literally the best advice you will get out of this thread.

You dont need a timing disk, you just pin the crank in place and lock the cams in place with the tools with it all loose, and then tighten it up once the belt is on.

IF you havent got the proper tools, dont even try it.

I have the renault tools and the f4r manual , so I should be OK. Would this sound like a good procedure.

1. Lock Bottom end at TDC
2. Lock the pulleys and loosen the retaining bolts.
3 Remove Belt and tensioners/Idlers.
4 Remove dephaser and realign the inlet so I can get the Cam locking tool to line up on the exhaust and inlet.
5 Fit new dephaser, Timing Belt, Tension.
6.Remove tools, rotate by hand.
7 Lock bottom end again and see if cams line up.

I would bring it to a specialist, but I live in Ireland, Ive see 1 other 182 here before, and after the shite a mech in a renault garage told me, I wouldnt trust anybody, at least I kow its right if I do it.

Thanks for all the help, finished the car on sunday, I did as I said above, and the timing was spot on when I closed up, engine sounds alot better, with alot more torque low down and more power, car revs much more freely now. Why people skimp on such jobs I dont know.
