Welsh Waterfalls

Spent a few days in Wales at the weekend and did the four waterfalls walk around Neath... some of the better shots..

Nice shots Pete, think the third one is probably my favourite - good colour to the trees and well controlled highlights. :)

How do you do this? ican never achieve this type of shot!

Neutral Density filters, unless it was dark to begin with.

Yeah nice shots Pete. What filters were you using (if any) - ND filters / Graduated Density?

Currently considering investing in some Graduated Density filters for landscape shots and such like, although not sure whether I'd get enough use from them.

Didn't have any filters with me, a polariser would maybe have helped bring out the colours and stop some light but it was shady enough under the trees to get the shutter down.

If you plan on shooting anything with the sky in it, GND's are fantastic personally, need to buy myself a new system. GND at work:

Thats crazy!

You'll need a good tripod and not to much light, set up your camera in full Manual mode, use a high f/number (small aperture), low ISO (50-200 depending on system) and to get good water movement you only need 0.3s-1second I find and then balance all this out. If you have Live View with exposure simulation this can help. Then a few things like a remote or use the in-camera timer and Mirror Lock Up can help reduce camera shake.

EXIF from image 3:
Camera:Canon EOS 40D
Exposure: 1second
Aperture: f/18.0
Focal Length: 10 mm

Then all I've done in post is use the Shadow/Highlight tool to bring out the shadows a little and reduce any nearly blown out areas.

Hope thats of some help!

What system are you currently using and what are you considering replacing it with.

Most on POTN seem to recommend the Lee holder with Hitech filters. Interestingly I saw one home made device whereby they'd used a 77mm cokin adaptor ring and stuck velcro to the ring and the respective filters - the velcro allows vertical adjustment of the filter and the filter ring provides the orientation adjustment.....

Currently got a Cokin P-Wide angle holder and adapter with a 2 stop cokin filter, was all very cheap but the filter isn't very good and leaves a nasty colour cast. When I can justify the funds plan on going down the POTN recommended route.
