Dont want to start arguement......

  TT
but im moving up in the world, and because im turning 21, can handle insurance better! im thinking of 182 obviously, however, im also thinking of looking at civic type r?

what are the pros and cons between both?i dont want to know which is better, hense why i dont want an arguement, i just want to know peoples thoughts on the pros and cons of the clio compared to the civic?and maybe to the cupra too?

Use the search mate, before everyone and their dog kicks off! lol

I really didnt like the TypeR, was thinking about buying one until I drove it. Better off with the 182!

  TT
the problem with the search though is that it brings up people saying "type r's sh*t etc etc," but thats not what im looking for, cause ive read that the torque steer on civic is a bummer, specially as soon as you hit vtec area, and other things that you may not pick up on a test drive necessarily (weather and other factors)

I know theyre pretty much equal in general, but im looking for the little things that makes them different

Personally Clio all the way for me I can see the CTR advanatges but i don't like them Power band isn't that much fun day to day IMO. The car doesn'/t look as nice plus whilst its possibly a better car speed wise its not as fun as the Clio it has its enjoyable follies and vices the Civic is more a racing bike wheras a Clios is more of a clowns bycyle as such if that makes any sence.

Best have a look/chat to previous owners of both ie ad and Si they have both sold there CTRs since after quicker times then they have owned the Clios.

The interior is much nicer, no rattles, lovely seats, all the dash/dials look good.

Gearbox is great and feels good where the gearknob is. Feels much smoother at higher speeds, 6th gear is a nice touch.

I didnt like the fact you cant see s**t when you check your blind spots, the pull was nothing like I was expecting from the v-tec. You need to go from 6th to 4th to get any pull at all, salesman was bigging it up and I thought it was pretty crap but didnt have the heart to upset him! lol

Overall its a good car, well made, goes fairly well, nice touches, good after-service, good dealers.

But its alot of money when for me it didnt feel that much faster that my current car. Theres no denying its a better car in nearly everyway, but it wasnt worth the upgrade with how much more I had to put towards it. I was quite dissapointed after id driven it.

  Golf 7R
Go for the CTR, it has better seats, better gearbox and is reliable as is the day long, and it can match the 182 for speed, might lose a tad of steering feel, but thats a smalll price to pay for the reliability...bullet proof!!

Honda/Civic maybe good but there not perfect there loads of problem with them plus many 182 owners heva perfect cars no problems.

  M140i/Orange 182
have drove my mates type R full pelt, i was expecting a hard hitting vtec and was slightly disapointed with it, just couldnt feel the speed as much as in my 182. my car just felt alot more raw and fun!

plus my car has never been back to the dealers, no problems

:)

  Civic Type-R
buy a Type-R i did, havent regretted it! build quality is soo much better, dont worry about what people say about 'twisties' how often do people drive like they are on a race track lol send me a msg if you wanna know anything

ive had a 182

id probably go for civic typer

ok theyre a hell of a lot more common and theyre very big cars

but got lots of room in them and slight mods give very healthy power increases on them!
plus they have 6 sgears.. somethign the 182 desperately needed.

  TT
an '02/'03 bmw 3series is also on the list (2.0) or IS200 or celica vvti tsport, i dunno how that mixes up stuff, im just not sure if thats too old a car too soon!cause 21 etc dunno if thats more of a husband type of car, if that makes sense!

LOL - you too? The sales guy at first told me off on the test-drive for not taking it to 5,700rpm (where he said the i-VTEC kicked in). So when the opportunity next came up, I give it some welly.

When we passed well into the 6k band, he said "Did you feel it kick in?" Erm, feel what exactly? That teeny-tiny uptake in performance? Hmmm. It was like going into a pub, gagging for a pint of Tennent's Super and being served a can a Bass Shandy.

A superb car all-round, but as edde says - day-to-day driving in that to get the best out of it, would be tiresome, imo.

same as me, drove a mates as i was all up for a ctr a few months ago..... all i heard was the cam change, no big pull etc, thought my cup pulled better around the 5k mark

left me underwhelmed

  Renaultsport Clio 182
I hade the same options and chose the 182 purely for driving reasons, it feels as close to a sports car as you are going to get in a front drive hatchback. The CTR is a fine car, its bigger and feels very well put together but its not as much fun to drive and the steering is lifeless, a bit like the new Clio 197 but faster.

My favourite engine is the 1.8 unit in the Corolla and Celica Hatchback, its a screamer with real kick on cam and returns 38mpg, the Clio is mid thirties and the CiTR is high tewnties if thats a factor for you.

I have no regrets not buying the CTR, but soetimes wish I had gone for an ITR, now thats a car!

Having had both.... I really like both....

Sorry guys but the CTR is better, however, as will all things better it costs more to run.

If you do decide on a CTR there are a couple of Specialist insurers who cant be touched, APlan and Noel Dazely. They where £600 cheaper for me when it came to renewal than UKI who Id been with for years.

  106 GTi
Drive them both it's the only way. Both where on my shortlist, much prefered the 182.

God this forum really is like groundhog day at times.

Civic Type R too boring for me. Yes its revvy, but yet, i didnt think its sound was all that amazing, not that the clio is either, but some people make out as if its worth wanking over - it isnt. The handling is grippy and competent, but seemingly not particularly playful or agile. Yes its built better, but who really cares about that.

I just think the Clio is a more involving drivers car all round. Most of the car publications tend to agree, and the Clio has won many awards. The Civic on the other hand, has not. A competent car for sure, but lacking a certain something that makes a car stand out as great rather than just good.

Since you ask about the T-Sport, I drove that within a day of driving the CTR. All things considered, if I had to choose between a CTR and Celica, I'd take the Celica every time.

The engine is very similar in character, but to me, was more manic as the lift kicked in, and when it did, it really did roar in an impressive fashion. Handling wise, actually they seem quite similar to me overall, but perhaps with a nod to the celica as i seem to remember it having more feel. Saying that, neither car can get close to the feedback and involvement of its french rival.

One area where the Civic does win over the Celica is its gearchange. To me, the Celica was a disappointment in this respect, particularly the 2nd to 3rd upshift when really going for it was difficult to get in, requiring a slow, delicate change that was at odds with the cars frantic power delivery. Also the gearing on the Civic seems more appropriate to its power delivery than the Celica which has gearing thats too tall. As a result, the Celica did feel even more gutless.

In practicality, not surprisingly the Celica loses out, but then its a coupe not a hatch, so that should really be compared anyway.

However, in most other respects, the T-Sport looks and feels more special than the Civic (and Clio), and it had a feel good factor to it IMO.

Overall though, I think i'd take the Clio over either.

Sorry mate, but that is just rubbish the CTR has always had great reviews...
the exception may EVO... which is virtually an extension of the renault press office....

Another thing is that Hondas customer service is 10times better...

Simply if you can afford the CTR go for it. If you cant then get the renault.

  Nissan 350Z
Yes, it has got good reviews, because its a good car. Most people who have compared and most reviews i've read where the cars are compared, the Clio is usually favoured over the Civic for the reason of it being more fun to drive. That is the key thing, if that is what you value more than anything else, then the Clio is the "better" car, regardless of price.

You always seem to state your opinion as fact, when it is not fact. I could have afforded a CTR no problem, but I chose the Clio. Many people on this forum could have.

What makes a car fun to drive? In my opinion, light weight (clio is lighter), feedback (clio has more), sensation of speed (clio wins again, feels faster), responsiveness (clio felt more responsive).

Each to their own and all that, but its quite simply not a case of a civic being better simply because its more expensive, which is exactly what you are trying to say,

And I dont buy this BS about evo being owned by renault either. Wow, its the best car in its class, but you cant say that because thats biased. Funny how evo preferred the new cooper s to the 197 though innit.

I honestly think i've heard it all now!

my mate has a typr r and it drinks fuel, they go about the same in a straight line, if your after a 182 cup I have one for sale inferno ;)

sadly im not in the market until just after christmas/new years, i was just getting opinions earlier to think about it! im planning on getting it as a 21st birthday present (selling my clio obviously for it)

As lovely as the clio is, i dont think my parents would understand buying me a clio 182, (this is after ive been talking to them) because they dont want to buy me a car just because its faster, so we'l see where my choices are when i have properly spoken to them about it!

"Yes its built better but who really cares about that"

I honestly think i've heard it all now!

Explain?

If I am in the market for a hot hatch, its because i want to be engrossed in the driving experience, while maintaining a little practicality.

Build quality is not a major concern of mine. If it was, I may have bought a VAG car or maybe a Jap car.

I'm surprised really that someone who wants a hot hatch would value build quality as being that high up their list, over say, driving thrills.

I see all the CTR zealots are coming out of the woodwork now though. What did you expect on a clio forum FFS

If you wanna jerk off over CTR's and **** clios off then i'm sure they have their forums just like we have ours. Except on their forum, they probably dont **** their cars off.

You really must be one of the biggest jokes on the forum, i dont see build quality as my main priority however, id like less rattle and know my car will spend more time with me in it, than in the dealers for warrenty issues.

Dont forget i actually own a Renaultsport, so i gain nothing by saying id choose a CTR, pull your head out of your a$$!

  Honda Civic Type R
pbirkett: seriously you do talk some rubbish when it comes to the ctr. it won what cars's hot hatch of the year award 3 years in a row, it has better build quality and reliability than just about everything in its class, sounds fantastic, goes like stink, can be easily modded, handles well, goes like stink, has a flawless gearchange and is full of character.

sure there are downsides but not the ones you mentioned. i will say yes the steering feels poor and yes they are common (i wonder why) but are in a different league to any corrola or celica(ridiculous thing to say).

just coz it's a clio forum doesn't mean you have to slate anything that rivals it. tiff needell's favorite hot hatch is the ctr. king of the hot hatches he calls it. watch him drive it on 5th gear hot hatch edition (on youtube) and tell me it isn't fun or lacks character.

Your car might have spent more time in the dealers than with you, but mine hasnt. Yes its had niggles, but to be honest, they dont stress me out to the same degree as the niggles in your car obviously stress you out.

It seems you and one or two others have a problem with people preferring clios on this forum. Ahem, you see that logo in the top left, that might give you a clue!

If your clio is that bad and you hate it that much, go on, buy a CTR. Thats your choice. I dont care. Just dont whinge on to me because i prefer the clio to drive. :clown:

it's not that you prefer the clio. that's fair enough. it's just that you talk utter nonsense about the ctr. you say things about it that i've never heard from anyone else. you must be in your own little narrow minded, pig headed world

Do I talk rubbish?

What rubbish have I talked?

My opinions are rubbish now are they?

You are the one talking rubbish mate, by having a go at me for having my opinion.

OK so it won what car award of the year. Its been many years since i read that mag, but its hardly a performance car orientated mag is it. In fact, they pretty much spend more time talking about MPG and how much boot space its got than the actual driving experience from what i remember of it.

I have never once said the CTR is a bad car, have i ? I appreciate you must enjoy putting words into my mouth so you can use it as an excuse to try and have a go.

The fact is though, I found it a less enjoyable drive than the Clio. I find it hilariously amusing that you cannot accept this, and that its some kind of undeniable fact that the CTR is just better end of story.

Everyone has their own priorities with cars, better is such a generic and meaningless word in this context.

Personally, I dont rate my cars in terms of what figures it gives in a magazine for performance, or how well built it is, or whatever other bullshit you are going to keep spouting at me. I rate my cars on the smile they put on my face, and to me theres no comparison. If you dont like it, well, you know the rest ;)

Like what?

I see you have 77 posts. Do you just hang around here so you can argue in defence of your precious car.

I am not so sad that i would hang around a CTR forum in case one of you lot slags clios off, no doubt, with the same misguided shite that you accuse me of.

So come on boy, what is it that is nonsense?

Actually my clios not been that bad, im just judging by ppls threads/posts on here, its clear you dont rate anything other than the clio...which is fine, but theres more to life than a clio ( and its me who needs to get out more!?) i like my clio, but you cant take anything away from the CTR its hard to find a flaw in it.

You seem to be the person who will jump on anyone who disagrees with your opinion, the clio is not for everyone and back to the original post he wanted to know which was best, and taking EVERYTHING into consideration its the CTR!

  Nissan 350Z
Actually there is plenty of other hot hatches i rate besides the clio. I never actually at any point said the CTR was bad, it just leaves me cold. I like the Williams. I like the Saxo VTS and 106 GTI. I like the 306 GTI-6 and Rallye. I like the 205 GTI. I like the original and Mk2 Golf GTIs. Its these cars that are the true classics.

Not many come along, but for me the clio is one. Why? Because its great fun to drive, and its quite cheap. When you start getting to the prices a CTR and higher cost to run, you are in a league with more potent genuine sportscars. To imply that people on this forum should have chosen a CTR if they could afforded it, speaking to people like they cant afford it or whatever, is highly patronising and insulting.

The Clio is great because of its superb price to fun ratio, and is unmatched. I wouldnt spend as much fuel and insurance on running a Type R... get something other than a FWD car then.

  Nissan 350Z
Incidentally people, i cannot believe that i am being flamed on a clio forum for having a positive opinion on a clio of all things. Isnt anyone going to stick up for me here :D

  Honda Civic Type R
lol i seem to have gotten you in a rage. you're calling me a boy now. :rasp:

if you look at our previous arguments i have never said "the ctr is better than a clio". the clio is a fantastic car to drive and many will prefer it (personal preference and all that) however comments like no character, dull blah blah blah are just stupid and no one with half a brain would say that.

i come on this forum coz i like the 'other marques' section and the general automotive section. but occasionally when i see a post like this i like to give an opinion. there are quite a few clio owners on the ctr forum giving good opinions.

to the starter of this post, you really do have to just drive both cars and see which you prefer. it could go either way as they both have a lot to offer the fun seeking driver. just don't take any of the reviews on here too seriously. especially those from pbirkett

  Nissan 350Z
LMFAO me in a rage mate. Hardly. I am sat here with a bottle of red wine and am very chilled out and calm. I just think that you are a very silly young man.

I dont see why you have such a problem with me stating a CTR is not as much fun to drive as a clio. That is my opinion, but you seem to have such the problem with me stating it.

But me in a rage? Dont kid yourself pal :D

BTW, do try and be less patronising and condescending in your posts, to tell the original poster to ignore my opinion is a bit pathetic really just because i dont agree with you. My opinion is not less worthy than yours.
