My Drive of the R27

  M135i
Hi all. Had my first drive of the R27 (no20/500) the other day, what can i say, its superb! First thing i noticed is how much they've stiffened the rear suspension up. The recaros hold really really well, but i could almost say they are a little big for me as the shoulder bolsters sit a little high.

I'd say the ride is the same as my cup, but all in all i think it handles better.

It corners extremely flat with very little body roll. I still find that as the same as the 'ff' 197 the back end gets a bit light under hard breaking.

I cant really comment on the whole engine and suspension package working as one yet as it only had 80 miles on the clock.

Ren Sport are definatley onto a winner with this one imo. Its the only car i'd swap my cup for at the moment. (yes i dont even think i'd change for a meggy!)

Ill see how it goes when there's been some more mileage on it.

i know the performance cant be discussed as the car is new and probably hadn't been bedded in properly ...... but was it quick ????

ohhh yes!! feels alot smoother than the early 197. seems like they've got rid of the first start blues aswel!

until they improve the engine i couldn't consider the package, everything else is great apart from the engine and thats a big thing to get wrong in a hot hatch really.

It's so annoying - it looks great, the seats are absolute sex wee, but as long as Evo mag and others keep saying month on month with their long termer that it feels gutless, it's not even a consideration.

why go on what evo say? i know some people regard them as the bible, but only you know for sure when you drive one.

Very nice James. I want to try it.;)

You can't really go any smaller wheels with he standard Brembos.

I could just about live with the performance IF I wouldnt also need ear plugs on the motorway. The gear ratios are the biggest mistake in this car (IMO) but clearly the overall low gearing was needed for Renault to have a hope of anyone believing the engine puts out anywhere near 194bhp ;)

Still, for someone who doesnt do, or care about, much motorway work, I reckon the R27 would be a great tarmac weapon :approve:

engine does put out 194bhp at the flywheel

engine does put out 194bhp at the flywheel

So they say, yet even with very very low overall gearing, the car only just about manages to seem quick, while being slightly slower than other cars with the sanme (alleged) power/weight that both accelerate quicker and have a higher top speed. It defies known convention.

Still a superb car though :star:

There's a 197 coming to an RR day on Saturday I'm going to, will see how it does then :)

I think you can, you'd just need to find a set which clears them.
My old coupe 20vt ran 16" wheels as standard - they cleared the coupes brembos (which look bigger than the 197's) they were tight though.

Are demonstators at the dealers then?

I'm interested in testing one, but I swear I'm black listed at all Renault dealers for test driving cars and never buying them!
