Crunch when I put it into reverse

  Dci 100
its not happend on my 172 but my valver used to do that until i started holding the clutch it for a second or two more before selecting reverse

mine does this even with the clutch as far down as it will go... only seems to happen if your moving forwards slightly though... if youre at a dead stop there is no noise at all...

^^ Same here. If it feels like it's going to crunch just put it in neutral then select reverse again. Well it works for me anyway :)

  R35 GTR
I always push into first then into reverse, before reversing, to line the synchros up. Never fails.

  LY 182
just delay putting it in reverse for a second after pushing the clutch down,,
if i clutch then straight in to reverse it crunches horrible but if you wait literally a second no crunch at all

Pretty much all the clios I've driven, including my current hybrid which has a 172 gearbox, do it if you try to put it in too quick. To avoid it I just put it in second then reverse.

  BMW M135i
Never have/had any problems with any of mine, you can't put them into reverse whilst rolling or they'll crunch because theres no syncromesh on reverse.

  Integra Type-R DC2
I find if you just push it right across, then gently into gear it doesnt. If you do it hard and fast it dose.

Anyone elses gear box Crunch when you push it into reverse? On a MK2 172?

When I complained to the dealer that the synchros were stuffed on my Mk2 172 he said why didn't you tell us there was a problem earlier, we might have been able to prevent it happening. I pointed out that I had. I'd complained to them that it was crunching going into reverse. To get that the clutch musn't be fully disengaging, so the synchros have to fight the engine. After they had to rebuild the gearbox they made damn sure the clutch was fully disengaging.
