law on decat pipes?

Yep. Although I think it's VOSA who do the test, not the police themselves.

about 60% of 172/182 owners on here have them...must be a lot of show/track cars!
your car will not pass an MOT without a cat, just depends if you can find a friendly place to test...or you cna be arsed to swap the cat back over and buy a new fitting kit every time ideally

Been thinking about getting a decat for a while but no-ones ever been able to post a link to a website that gives a definitive answer that cannot be disputed by anyone
I've decided that despite wanting one I simply can't be arsed with the hastle.........all this talk about insurance companies, police, MOT's, VOSA etc,etc and spending £30 to swap over ever MOT then £30 to put decat back on, all for a couple of bhp on a N/A engine

Just to clear it up having a decat IS NOT NECESSARILY ILLEGAL. Legally all cars post some point in 1992 iirc had to come with a cat from the factory, however cars DO NOT have to have a cat by law thereafter, it is only legally required that the manufacturer fits one. It does have to pass an emissions test but if it can manage to do this with a decat (that is unlikely tbh but I have seen it happen with a few Mk1's) then its perfectly legal.
I know the end result is the same, but surely it isn't actually the lack of a cat that's illegal? I thought it was the resultant emissions problem? In other words it's not illegal as long as your fumes are ok? I may be wrong, and I'm sure a decat makes them not ok anyway.
I don't think it matters much with the 182 anyway. I'm fairly sure the insides of mine are sprinkled up and down the M6 Toll

You might be superised with the new MOT legislation garages don't want to loose there licences.

#27 posts and still no link to any website categorically stating the facts is good enough for me to stand by "it aint worth the hastle", no disrespect to anyone but it just seems like everyones got their own opinion on the issue thats derived from hearsay, speculation, assumption and chinese whispers etc :S

I dont know what ammendment it was to the road vehicles construction and use regs so its basically impossible to find.

my 182's emissions light has gone off since i changed my plugs, and thats a decat - no idea if that relates to the actual law on the emissions though? As far as I'm aware, you can have a decat aslong as it passes - although thinking about it, the car would have much higher emissions than standard, which is how cars are taxed, so maybe not.. when all's said and done though, they aren't going to take a car away to find out - a notice is all you'd ever get
100% correct. By law car manufacturers have to fit them from the factory but as soon as it has left the factory it doesn't matter if it has it or not as long as it passes an emissions test. It does seem kind of stupid but thats the way it is.
Really the best bet is to have a nice J-Reg Clio that doesn't need to meet the lower emissions

Found something strange I never knew though;
From the Road Traffic Act 1991:
20.—(1) Section 144 of the [1988 c. 52.] Road Traffic Act 1988 shall be amended as follows.
(2) In subsection (1) (which removes the requirement for third-party insurance or security where £15,000 is kept deposited with the Accountant General of the Supreme Court) for "£15,000" there shall be substituted "£500,000".
You don't need to have third party insurance if you deposit half a million! But up till 1991 that was only £15K!
Never heard of that before, 15K and you were OK to drive any car you owned. Half a mill's a fair bit off the lottery jackpot dream garage though.
Nothing specific about cats yet.

My 172 only just passed with a 200 cell sports cat' and that was after 20 minutes of trying. My car is by no means a shitter.
