  A blue one.
We just junked our Nortel exchange in favour of trixbox.

Asterisk is very cool, works like a charm and is ultimately flexible.

For a test I wrote a little php script that handles a caller to see how easy it is to interact with them, turns out it's super simple. Going to write a script to allow people to dial up and pay invoices automatically.

dude, a BCM IS a switch - i dont understand why you would connect it to another switch? confuzzuled.

you are confusing telephone exchange switch and networking switch :)

right the bcm 50 has on the bottom an ethernet port where the phones should connect but of course 1 port mean only 1 phone ! so you need a way to connect more phones and in networking you use a switch or a hub to connect multiple pc's to one connection

so what i am asking is, is there any specific switch they like or any specific technology the switch needs to support to get the phones connected

I fitted a BCM a few years ago.

Nortel provided a switch/hub as part of the package.

Nothing abnormal from what i can remember McB. In fact i think we took a switch to site and then realised one was supplied. Plain old run of the mill switch which obviously has the correct amount of ports for the ext's and a bit of future expansion.

I can find out 100% for you in the morning, i will phone one of the guys i work with.

The ext's are just IP addresses so it doesnt matter what switch/hub it is.

It was 2002 though and one of the first BCM's we fitted here.

Any switch will do, best to get a powered ethernet switch though or you will need transformers for the phones.

He said they use, Cisco or 3com mostly.

That port on the bottom of the BCM50 will need to set to trunk port though......dont ask me how....been a long time.
