Reverse gear Crunch

9/10 When i put my car into reverse it crunches and i don't no why its realy annoying the cars only a 55 plate so maybe the clutch needs adjusting or something, i now when possible srart the car in reverse with the cluch in obviously so it doesnt stall just to avoid damaging my gearbox.

Is the car compeletly still when putting in reverse? Won't it be under warrentee anyhow?

No Syncro in reverse, you need to be stopped as in completely still, and have the clutch all the way down.

Mine has a small crunch sometimes even when going into reverse too. I think its to do with the fact you may not always be 100% stationary when putting it in reverse. When im dead still mine never does it.

should be 2ish years old so should be under the mechanical failure part of the warranty.... i know some people start the car with the clutch depressed, but starting it in reverse??

my car crunches in reverse all the time when the front of the car is slightly higher on a hill...

and the car is not movng at all because i am stopped completely with the handbrake on when i select reverse in my drive....never grinds otherwise...

any answers?

i may take it in to be looked at, it happens even when i have the handbrake on its realy annoying because it just sounds like its damaging my gearbox everytime i put it in reverse

haha, used to say that all the time to my mate in his corsa when his synchro's were going, then did it once in my car and he came out with the classic:

'If you can't find it, F**K UP YOUR GEARBOX' in a very loud voice in a busy car park, ahahahaha!

my old 1.2 used to do it quite alot which made me look like a bit of a moron in tescos carpark, but when i swapped to a momo gearknob i cant recollect it ever doing it again.

Stick it in 3rd gear first then reverse, stops it grinding no matter how hard you put it in reverse.

Same problem with mine too!

I think if i take it to renault they will just quote 'All clios do it' as ususal.

Anyone had their reverse gear crunch sorted through the warranty?

Don't put it into reverse as quick after you've put the clutch down. As said theres no syncro on reverse and if the internals are still spinning then it'll crunch.

As said before, try putting it into another gear first to 'slow' down the gearbox before selecting reverse.

Mines an 04 plate and my reverse gear crunches almost every time aswell lol...Its soooo annoying

and my mates 05 plate extreme dus aswell

The knack to it is to squeeze the coller right the way up to the top, shift the gear lever as far to the left as possible and slowly place it into reverse

I find when parked, Putting the clutch down and then puting it in reverse slowly it dosent crunch. If i do it fast it crunches. Even at a standstill.

Putting it in reverse after just stopping crunches like hell. Wish it wouldnt. Only cure is waiting a second or two.

yup. Most cars are the same, just double de-clutch and it shouldn't crunch

+1 as long as i do it slowly it doesn't crunch.
It's always at really embarrising moments that i forget though when there are loads of people around to hear it or when im giving people lifts lol

Mine does it too. To avoid the crunching rev the engine a little while engaging teh reverse. works for me.

Quite embarrassing, but couple of my mates cars are lift-reverse and they do it too so we are all used to the sound around eachother.

Thought i'd raise this thread from the dead as I have a similar problem!

My Mk3 clio has started to really hate going into reverse, especially first thing in the morning, there is no lever or anything you just pull back as if it's sixth gear.

It feels really resistant and just will not go in no matter how hard I try, I have to spend time wiggling it in neutral and playing with the clutch to get it to go in.

After I get it in, it is fine until I leave it in a car park or whatever for a while and try again.

Getting really annoying!

Anyone got similar?

Mine does it on ubber cold mornings but all i do is if it fails once lift the clutch put it down again n it goes in fine.....

Mine doesnt crunch anymore i've got used to it now, it was just when i first got the car it was a bit strange. On cold mornings my gearbox is always a bit stiff though.

my 106 did it, my saxo did it, my clio does it (tho not as much), its the gearbox's way of saying "ohh ohh ohh, im am a froggy!"
