PC ram upgrade

  172 cup
Am wanting to up my ram on my main pc at home. It currently only has 2gb ddr2 and I want to double it. This may sound a stupid question but I take it there are different types of ram available, so how do I make sure I get the right type for my pc?

cheers
Stu

there are lots of sites that can give you upgrade options, all you have to do is tap in your pc details.
google is your friend!

Whats the reason for upgrading? 2GB is a reasonable amount anyhow.

The pc has been altered since I bought it though. Won't that matter?
I'll have a look now. Cheers.

Just seems to be slowing a bit more than it used to. I have a little ram/cpu monitor and the ram tends to be getting into the 90% when playing a game on one screen and watching a video on the other. I have a 3.2g dual core processor so I just thought upgrading the ram would be good. I have 3gb ram on my laptop and it seems to run smoother than the pc.

there are several things you need to find out and consider first.

1. you need to know how much ram your motherboard can handle.

2. what speed you want and your motherboard will accept.

3. and what operating system you have coz vista dont need or wont use much more then 3Gig

4. and also how many ram slots do you have?

Be worth upgrading to windows vista 64bit first.

im running vista 32bit with 4gb ram. It uses the whole 4gb aswell, the latest update service pack allows 32bit to use 4gb, where as before it would only allow a max of 3.5gb.

What are the main differences between 32 and 64?
Do you have to pay to upgrade?

Cheers

Yeah I'll do it when I get home tonight although it shouldn't need cleaning as its a new install of vista about a month ago. I deleted the entire system and started again.

Thanks for all the help :)

  Better than yours. C*nt.
PC6400 is the best to go for IMHO - it's only a smidge more than 5400, faster 9 times out of 10, and is more than anyone needs for anything up to a Q6600 processor...

I'd also avoid buying from eBay unless it's a branded stick. A lot of stuff that comes from there is made using extremely cheap chips which kills performance...
