Newbie *Shock Horror*

Yes i have read through google, yes i have searched.

Could i have a quick run down, rather than reading through pages and pages of jargon.

As a newbie to the DSLR world i have rounded down to the;

Canon 1000d, 20d and 40d and

Nikon d40x and d40.

Can anyone give me a quick run down of differences and what they would suggest.

Thanks.

nikon d60 comes with a vibration reduction lens

good for low light shots about £318 delivered now

Just go to Jessops and have a play with each. The differences are going to be pretty slim for entry cameras. Just see which you like the feel of.

I'm confused why you've got a Canon 40D in your list which is £500+ just for the body yet haven't got a Nikon D60/D80/D90, all of which are better than a D40.

And why a 20D when it went out of production around 3 years ago?

What's your budget?

A bit odd that you have chosen 1000D, 20D and 40D, as the price differences alone are enough to put some people off.

Have you been to Jessops and held any of them?
Not yet no.

Found canon 40d on ebay for 320 ish with standard lence.

Its just a list ive researched myself. Hence better getting advice rather than trying to research yourself.

Budget is 400 max.

Thats why im asking, these are the cameras ive found people suggest, have themselves.

  Dodgy one
bet the 40d doesnt stay that ;) depends which lense it is also they came with two kit lenses 18-55mm which retailed around £800 and 17-85mm which was £990

Think it was 400d canon actually.

Well just has a little search on jessups and d60 or canon 1000d seem good. Any diferences ?

Performance is similar, unless you're a pro I doubt you'd notice any significant difference between the Canon and Nikon in performance terms. Go to a camera shop and see which feels best for you to use and hold.

Exactly.

The deciding factor between the entry models will probably be how it feels to hold/use.

considered a D50 from ebay? smashing bits of kit. ive got a D40 and D50 myself with a selection of lenses. since your in northampton, we could meet up if you wanted to have a ganders at them.

bit of a price difference there lol

how much you got to spend? (I'd not bother with the D40/D60 or the X version)

Ive read that the d50 is the same as the d40 practically and your better off getting a d40 out of the two.

Vibrio why shouldn't i bother with the d60.

Yes im going to the bullring tomorrow, so will take hold of the canon and nikon.

Nope.

D50 has a built in AF motor therefore can be used with all Nikon-fit lenses.

D40 doesn't and therefore can only be used with Nikon AF-S lenses (unless you want to manually focus all the time) which are more expensive.

So if you want a wider range of cheaper lenses then the D50 is the one to go for.

i was in the same situation as u m8, i was stuck between the D60 and the 1000D, i ended up going for the cannon 1000D and haven't looked back or regretted my choice! love it, feels gr8 and takes awesome picks! plus its in ur budget!

Right, went in to Jessups.

They said that the d60 can only have some lense's with DX on them ?

Where as the 1000d can take practically any lense.

I wanted the d60, but if its restricted to minimal lense's then what should i do ?

Any one else experience this ?

its hardly minimal lenses, but yes some won't auto focus. get a d50/d80 instead if you want nikon

Dont have the dollar !

Im only a newb to SLR, and im not a photography mad person, just will use now and again.

Basically want a standard lense and a wider angle lense, then will use filters and thats about it, probably will never use a zoom lense, any suggestions ?

Basically in jessups they had about 20 lense's on show, and he was basically saying i could only use about 2 with the nikon and any with the canon.

D50 is cheaper than a D60.

If he said that then hes talking crap TBH. The Canon and Nikon arent interchangeable. Theres still a massive selection of lenses that will AF.

Depends what lenses etc you want. The Sigma 10-20mm which is a very very popular wide angle is about £300. That will autofocus on a D60.

Now iv'e read something else.

D40 or D60 ?

Will i see any diffence with 4meg pixels.

On my 7meg point and shoot, it was'nt all that tbh, and if i downgrade to 6meg with the d40 whats the outcome ?

  172 mk2 Iceberg
no diff with the pixels unless your gonna crop lots...

d60 is newer and maybe better nicer lens just over the non vr

get the d40 if your not gonna use it a lot

  172 mk2 Iceberg
for light practice use.......

if you realy like taking photos as i do

maybe spent the extra £100 and get the 60

iv had a camera or one sort or another since the age of 12

no have a ok dslr and a good compact

First dslr i got was the d60 and is an amazing camera for £300

D40 is very close but im also an Engineer so like a quality "tool"

the camera wont make a good pic

just helps sometimes
