Losing Coolant!!

  clio 182
Hi guys,

I have a 2004 182 and it has recently started losing coolant, not by a huge amount though but it appeared to be coming out the lid of the expansion tank so i changed the lid for a new one however it doesn't appear to of made any diffence, had it up on ramps on Saturday but no signs of a leak, car doesn't over heat (don't think the fan comes on either) and the needle shows half way on the dash when driving has this happened to any else ??

I am guessing that it could be the thermsostat as seems to have a few posts on this as i have already changed the Expansion Tank lid.

Any help would be great

:approve:

Mate, I've got the same problem with my 02 172.

Took a trip to Newcastle at the weekend and about 2 miles from my mates house. Oil temp needle went from normal to right to the max and the stop light came on.

I got the RAC out - I was bricking it cos he was like "could be a head gasket"... he took the cap off and there was loads of pressure and splashback, he then filled the coolant and it just vanished. He basically had to fill it twice, drove back from Newcastle and it seems fine. However it still looks like it is losing coolant somewhere??

I'm keeping an eye on it, and i'm gonna change the coolant cap. Failing that, it's going to the garage - more expense!

Has anyone had this happen to them, and WTF do we do? :(

Definitely sounds like the headgasket, mine's done it twice. Check for murky steam/smoke coming out of the exhaust. I'd be surprised if it wasn't the gasket.

Edit: just re-read the original post. Symptons sound a bit odd for HG failure, might be something else. First reply definitely sounds like HGF though.

Had thought HG but no steam or smoke and the oil is fine, thinking it may be just a small leak, will investigate at the weekend.
