Tippex marks would indicate a hap hazard method of putting the cambelt on yes. But you cannot tell for sure just from those photos.

Though the F4R pdf does say to mark everything up on page 7-13 so who knows.

As per the replies above, its the other end you need to look at once the crank is pinned in place.

Well head came off and there are 8 bent exhaust valves which i wasn't expecting, especially when it was sold as 'running perfectly'. Nevermind.

Avoid cheap replacement valves, if you dont mind spending the money get them from renault, if not just buy secondhand ones.

Somewhere like MWM or BTM will no doubt have them lieing around from when they fit uprated ones to customer cars.

Will do, that sounds a solid plan to be honest. I've never replaced valves before so don't know whether to tackle it myself or get someone else to do it. There is no rush as this is a spare engine, so i might have a read up on it.

I bought it off of a guy on ebay. The block was badly damaged where the gearbox exploded, so it was nice and cheap anyway. I suspected something else might be damaged so i guess 8 bent valves isn't the end of the world. The bottom end was going to be chucked anyway, but i'd hoped to save a few parts from it. All that appears fine is the crank. The pistons have had a chat with the bent valves.

Its not particuarly difficult, just a bit fiddly.

Helps if you have small dextrous hands, my mrs can actually do it better than I can rather annoyingly. LOL

Fred, everything was out mate. The horseshoe wouldn't touch it (exhaust cam was 20 degrees out). I'll get some pics of the internals in a mo, but whatever happened to it wasn't good. Somethings slipped or shocked it. Its a shame really as the internals are like new, I can't find a mark on anything. The cams aren't even scored.
