I've been today to look at a 2012 Clio RS 200 with cup suspension, damaged.
Its registered as Cat D, 38K miles and it needs bumper, bonnet, headlights, airbags, screen.
There may be more required - i have a body man who will go look at it tomorrow morning if i want to take it further to see if...
Yup, but frustrating you have to pay what could amount to a significant percentage of the cars value for a belt change that is well over due.
And, come resale time, you're not going to get that money back because Joe Public will generally look for the cheapest car, not the best serviced one.
I...
Well that was Renault rates and they did it in sightly under a day.
The full kit can be bought with genuine parts and a Gates belt (which is what Renault use) for under £250 on ebay.
Tight for space doesnt help.
Typically £500ish from a good indy, or £800 upwards from a main dealer.
I paid £888 for timing belt, dephaser, water pump and aux belt from my local main dealer. That with a years warranty on the work.
I bought my 197 with slightly rose tinted glasses knowing it needed a belt as it had just 52K miles, but is 9 years old, though i got it at a v good price.
It was expensive to do the belt, dephaser pulley and pump (particularly given i went to a reputable Renault main dealer near me as i couldnt...
I've been looking at a lot of the adverts on AT for Clio 197s and 200s, and one thing that really surprises me is the amount of cars that DONT seem to have had their timing belt done?
With it being 72K miles / 6 years that means that any car 2010 or older should have had it done, yet a lot of...
The question has to be - WHY?
The car doesnt need them, they'll look a bit silly on a standard car.
They'll cost a fair bit by the time you buy them, get them colour coded and fitted.
Either keep your money or put it towards some worthwhile mods.
Is it just the the thumb grips?
You can get them on ebay

I've used them and they're great. :)
Funny, i'd been thinking of trying that.
Didnt get a chance to have a try yet, but will give it a go i think.
If that doesnt work i'll give Snappy a shout.
It seems i'm somewhat late to the party - there seems to be a load of threads on this ranging back many years but all the links to ebay listings or sites that sell them are all out of date. :(
Anyone done this recently and where did you get your tips? Stainless steel rolled preferred. :)
The steering wheel on my 197 has started to wear at the ten to two position. The top coat of rubberised surface is peeling off and its annoying.
What has anyone else done?
These people seem to come recommended - i'm assuming at about £150 - for a retrim

For the sake of the price of a belt and pulley kit, do the whole lot.
In fact, i'd do the water pump as well.
Genuine Renault Dephaser Pulley, Genuine Renault Water Pump, Gates Timing Belt Kit.
Job Jobbed.
Well i suspect thats why it hadnt sold. Because people more intelligent than me knew it would need done.
In fairness i put in a cheeky bid and got it, so i'm not complaining.
Well thats what i keep telling myself.
Too often you go to buy a car and you've just to take the sellers word for the fact its been done as they've "lost" the paperwork or never had it.
