I think your code reader is correct. Mine had a similar problem where the throttle stopped working and the garage changed the throttle position sensor (I believe they have to change the whole throttle unit..) and it has been fine since.
I can't remember how much it cost but it wasn't much. :)
I have replaced the RAM and hard drive in my previous gen Macbook. It is very easy to do and does not void the warrenty as Apple counts them as user servicable parts.
Never attempted to change the CPU though!
