6,250rpm is the official figure from Renault iirc
Mine is a 1.6 and sometimes goes straight to 6,500 (sometimes more) and sometimes the limiter kicks in at 6,250...
You missed the locking pins on the crankshaft, those are a must aswell.
Here in south america the 1.4/1.6 16v have the tendency to break the timing belt even before the reccomended 60k kms interval...I've seen cars with broken belts (and valves) at 50k kms :s
I did mine at 50k kms just to be...
Bet it started to act weird when hot and worked better if you let it cool down...but when it dies it is really difficult for the engine to catch up and run...
Clean the idle air valve (both the valve and the bit where it sits on the intake) and then have a look at the coilpack...my friends car had rusty connections on the coilpack, he cleaned it up and the fault dissapeared.
Mine has been doing the same lately, the mechanic cleaned the temp sensor connector, the fan resistor pack (mounted on the radiator) connector and the main ground lead from the battery to the body and now the fan kicks in as it should! Go for those first.
Clio II - 1.6 16v
Recently the cooling fan has been a little lazy to turn on...it works perfectly if you turn on the aircon but on its own it will never work...
In this market the Clio does not have a radiator switch, only a small resistor to control both low and high speed radiator fan...
My car had a slight misfire only present at idle, took all four coil packs (1.6 16v) and they were all rusty (due to my engline cleaning habits, must admit) and once I cleaned them up and reconnected all the misfires went away...wheew
Try a good plastic polish and lots pf patience, it WILL take a while...and when you get the desired result be dure to use a good wax to keep plastic oxidisation at min...
