A better way would be to buy a sealed battery like this:

I used 0AWG for mine. Some say you don't need it that thick but I found it worked better with 0AWG over 4AWG.
You can't really put a fuse on it as, depending on your battery, you could be putting a lot of current down the line for the starter and alternator.
