As far as I am aware, that's exactly what you would do.
Fix the battery in the boot securely using either a battery box or a mount if you don't mind it on show. Then run the positive through to where the battery used to be so that you can make the neccesary connections e.g. the loom, alarm etc. Then make sure you bolt the - to a good earth point i.e. scrape away any paint so it's in contact with bare metal. As for size of cable I am not 100% sure but isn't it something like 0 or 1 gauge.....someone will be able to confirm that tho.

I used 0AWG for mine. Some say you don't need it that thick but I found it worked better with 0AWG over 4AWG.
You can't really put a fuse on it as, depending on your battery, you could be putting a lot of current down the line for the starter and alternator.

0AWG should be fine mate but as I have not done this before I hope someone can confirm it will be fine.
As for a fuse, don't need one as you are only effectively extending the live cable and you don't have a fuse on this cable in it's current position either.

Should also point out it can affect your ins cover also, esp if you do it the cheap way and your car goes up in flames....
I would do it like this....(Fuse covering the Alternator charge lead should be greater than the alternators output but below the cables rating....Fuse covering the main batt supply should be great enough to withstand cold starts but again less than the cables rating).....
The Batt supply cable to the fused distribution should be 0awg minimum, on cold starts the initial draw can be extremely high....(even a 150amp fuse could blow on some larger engined cars), Check your starter specs for max draw....

intended to use a 0awg wiring, wit a 150a fuse,
i shouldnt need no.5 because everything in the engine bay is earthed to the chassis, and so is the battery.
where do the other 3 points on the fused distribuion block go??
to all the other battery connections in the engine bay??
i was going to:
consolidate all the battery connections under the bonnet to a 0awg wire,
and run in to the boot,
is this the cheap way??
your diagram looks the same kind of idea,
only running an extra piece of wire to the alternator no??
but just running the power wire to where it would have gone into the fuse box to begin with?? :S

one thing you might wanna do is once the battery is in place in the battery box,is to take a small hose and run it from inside the battery box and drill a smaal hole in the boot floor and run the other end of the hose out through the hole to vent the fumes from the battery....you will get some,as i found out when i did it on my old clio.
