The balls on the selector arm for the gearbox very rarely wear it's usually the cable I cable tied the selector on my Megane which worked for a while I til I could replace the cable

No worries. They sound like they're pulling your pisser mate You can swap the cables out. There are 2 coloured cables on the dCi 100. A blue one and a white/grey one. There's 4 torx bolts that hold the unit together and then you can swap the cables. The hardest part is getting the selector out...
