Assetto Corsa modding (PC)

Yeah, AC is better today than it has ever been thanks to the ongoing work from the mod community.

I do feel that we are potentially at a bit of a "parting of the ways" though in terms of CSP and Pure, specifically over the new LCS (linear colour space) feature that has been added to CSP. LCS is generally a good thing in terms of improving the colour management and handling when it comes to rendering, but it's a massive job to implement given it requires a rewrite of pretty much every shader in the game. I can appreciate why Peter Boese has doubts as to whether or not it's worth his time to update Pure to use LCS as it will be a real pain to rewrite so much stuff, and then to ensure it works!

Chaps. Need a bit of help!

Ive had AC for yonks now, albeit not used it all that much. Just getting back into it.

I ran it at work for a while and then took my PC home. It was flawless at work, no issues at all. Since taking my PC home, its just a nightmare. It takes upwards of 10 minutes sometimes to load a single track! Ive done some googling and checked a few things but nothing seems to have worked.

My only oddity is my pc seems to be getting incredibly slow speeds at home. Across the room from the router, its showing 25 down. My phone, on the other hand, sat next to said PC, is showing 500 down.

Does AC 'download' content each time? Surely tracks/cars are stored on that device?

Halp!

My take from this is that you’re connected via WiFi? Get an Ethernet cable, that rules out any connection issues.
Yep, you're correct.

I thought as much but im a total noob so I figured I would ask here first

Ill report back once ive run a long ass eth across the living room

The tracks and cars are stored locally although CSP downloads config files and ambient occlusion patches if new ones are available. Is it getting stuck on the small CSP loading screen or the fullscreen 'in game' loading screen, and if the latter, what does it say bottom left corner?

Excuse my absolute noob understanding on this but ill try and explain.

I load everything up via Content Manager, much easier. Im also going in VR. Didnt try it without VR tbf, but as I say, no real need as VR or not, it worked perfectly at work.

I hit drive in CM, pick a track and car, then whatever the 'go' button is bottom right. Loading screen pops up quickly, and then sits there forever and a day. Bottom left is doing something but I had it plugged into my 75" TV and the aspect was way off. It cut off the loading bit, bottom right, annoyingly!

General thoughts are that maybe it was downloading some shaders etc? Combined with the lack of speed (god knows why!) and thats maybe why its being super slow. Ill run some more tests over the weekend, inc a hard wired internet connection, and go from there.

Worse still, when I did eventually get it to run, I couldnt even click 'start race' because of the bloody VR headset. Raging

Worth trying it without VR.
If you're on the fullscreen loading screen then everything has been downloaded so AC is just loading files. I've seen it be quite slow for badly made mod cars before, and some apps have had quite slow loading times, but generally it shouldn't be slow at that point if you're loading a kunos car and track combo.

Little update: It worked!.......Sort of....

Got home, loaded everything up and, this time, clicked 'Full Screen' in Content manager to allow me to see wtf was being loaded in the bottom left. A sub 5 second loading screen this time. So, it was either the poor connection I experienced, or it was something to do with it not loading in full screen. Either way, I was happy.

Then I experienced about 2 hours of utter rage with my VR headset which turned out to be entirely my fault. Joy. 3 hours of 'Gaming' which was about 5 laps of Monza followed by 99% rage. Yay for PC gaming.

Took a break, had dinner, came back to it and then AC started throwing a shitfit over nothing. Id load up CM, select a track and car, hit 'Go' and then it would crash my entire PC. To the point where I couldnt even move the mouse. Id have to hold the power button down to restart the PC!

For some reason, I think it has to do with SteamVR. The one time I did manage to get a response out of the PC, SteamVR threw up a 'critical error'.

Bleurgh. Im beginning to lose patience with all of this now tbh.

As per the VR thread, I finally got AC working properly now with my setup. BOSH.

So, of course, I immediately want to chance my luck and start modding AC

Ive watched a few videos/tutorials on modding and 99% of them involve spending money. I get that adding in new cars/tracks is a long and challenging process but does anyone have any tips/websites for decent mods?

@McGherkin you seem to spend a fair bit of time on there - tips appreciated!

Well, first, I know you're using Content Manager, but are you using the patreon version of Custom Shaders Patch and Pure?

But for free content, there's no better place to start looking;

You can use filters to see most downloaded/highest rated. Start there. Particularly;
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/a3dr.235463/ 90s Supercars, NFS Tournament packs are excellent. Diablo! Testarossa!
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/ben-obro.245829/ Really nice mods, Singer is lovely.
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/patrik-marek.207012/ (BTCC Primera and Volvo are mostly complete, BMW has an unfinished interior)
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/some1.4082/ Only 2 mods, Corvette C6 pack which is nice, NSX I don't massively get on with but is good
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/aphidgod.218231/ Great Impreza mod.
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/nikkk78.220207/ Rally Cars
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/mhs.167765/ Virtual Racing Cars' Free Mods
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/pessio.373712/ Lots of classic stuff
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/shaun-clarke.208184/ Ginettas, TCRs

Tracks
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/james-skinner.4810/ Really high quality Castle Combe/Thruxton
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/phoenix77.238937/ LA Canyons, Pacific Coast, great US based cruising roads.
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/brun.17545/ Donny which needs no explanation, and High Force, a good UK country road loop
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/tiago-lima.48002/ Various circuits mainly japanese
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/terra21.213193/ Cadwell, Croft, Daytona etc
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/lilski.218202/ Road America, Watkins Glen etc
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/fat-alfie.138572/ Historic tracks
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/gunnar333.243674/ Goodwood FoS etc
https://www.overtake.gg/downloads/authors/tyrone-nukedrop-mods.154296/ Many circuits, really like Clydeside even though it's fictional
That's just getting started really. Search a track/car and you'll probably find it, and Overtake/RD doesn't allow shitty forza rips so usually reasonably good quality.

But tbh if you go with Race Sim Studio, Virtual Racing Cars, or United Racing Design, you absolutely will not be disappointed in those payware cars. Honestly, do this; https://racesimstudio.sellfy.store/.../?referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fracesimstudio.com%2F - you will love every single car.

Okay, now ive downloaded more than I think ill ever need and ive composed myself again, some questions

So, yes im using CM. Relatively happy with that, but I just need to spend the time to calibrate it a bit further. Ive got everything 'working' now, at a reasonable rate, so I just want to fiddle more.

Still using the free Custom Shaders Patch and I dont think I have Pure. Both, I hear, are worth it. So maybe ill chuck the few quid at it that they cost.

Im also on the Free version of CM. I hear its worth paying the, again, relatively cheap price, of that to upgrade.

Ill need a bit more practice but I also would quite fancy doing some online stuff. I kind of miss GT in that sense. I smashed so many hours of GT Sport over lockdown, playing multiplayer. Free CM doesnt allow online, do you have the paid version and if so, do you do online stuff? Any good?

Honestly I wish I had the free time these days to commit to doing online stuff - there's lots of great championships out there and there's plenty to do, but I tend to have time to just jump in and hammer about for 10-15 mins these days and not much more. Open servers can be a bit dicey so you're best off finding a league or community to race in. Again, Overtake has a racing club; https://www.overtake.gg/forums/racing-club.671/ But yes, I've had some absolutely cracking races over the years.

Yep, both are worth it, it is a monthly subscription for CSP and pure but you can always just sign up, download, and cancel in the first month. Updates aren't exactly frequent lately.

I just downloaded and played it for the first time. First impressions are, what a load of shite. It's not exactly user friendly 😂 finally got in a car and the chase camera moving around was ridiculous, so figured that out then did a lap on a controller that's way faster anything @Sir Nancy Flowers can achieve and went back to need for speed underground 2 😂

Fairly simple tutorial here;

Obviously you both have to have the same mods and mod versions, CSP version I don’t think is strictly necessary but worth having the same to rule out any compatibility issues.
