Repair or replace Clio 172

  Clio 200FF
Hi all, don’t really post much, more of a search button person but after some advice.

I have a Clio 172 for the last four years, just recently had its MOT and came back with some advisory’s as to be expected. Working out how much it would cost to fix and replace, along with belts due later this year. The costs are comming close to the value of the car and I’m unsure what to do? Do I suck it up and pay or do I run it for a while and see what else is out there.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

4 tyres and a set of rear brakes isn't too bad?

I worked it at

Tyres x4 £300 fitted
Rear brakes discs £150
Rear pads £20
Tracking £40
Belts £700-1000
Needs a CV joint as started to click £?

Total £1210-1510

Value of the car is probably around £2.5k

Do you love the car? Pay for the work

Want to try something new? Somebody on here will snap it up

It's a sort of lose-lose situation, either you pay for the work to up the car value or the value drops significantly because it needs so much work

As @daveski says the maintenance is nothing out of the ordinary just a shame it's all due at once!

Its a day's work, find someone who works on these nearest to you, always the easiest way if not doing it yourself

Get new tyres, rear pads and discs then run it for a bit and see if you want to keep it

Hows the rust? thats the real expensive fix on these!

A tidy bit of surface rust on the bottom of the car by the petrol tank, I take the arches off in the spring and clean all out.

Yes I will fit the rear discs, to keep costs down

Unfortunately the complete kit is around £700.

Thanks for the advice

Simple really. The thousands I've spent on mine over the years was purely to continue my enjoyment of it. I'm not owning it for any financial gain and also for the fact that the last one I saw on the road was around September last year.

Given their age and what they are designed for - they are the complete antithesis of 99% of every piece of generic crap that you see within car showrooms these days. With very few exceptions, I couldn't buy anything new that closely reflected what the 1*2 was about and that novelty alone is a big pull for me.

If you've no connection to the car - then it is what it is and you could quite easily sell up and move on. As Colin-S mentioned, rust will be a factor for their age now and I've had two rounds of invasive 'surgery' on my 182 that combined easily surpassed its trade-in value. If you do go down that route however, you might be a bit surprised at just how many panels are still available from Renault in France.
