If you want a cheap reliable fun hatch, maybe try a Swift? They're cheap as chips at the moment and mine have been faultless, despite trackdays and 'Ring trips.
Having owned a 172, 182, 197 and Megane 225 I'd personally opt for a Megane if I was to buy one again as a daily. As said 197 gearboxes are awful and they're really thirsty for a 2.0 n/a hatch too, worse than the Megane which is surprising.
If I had a car that was ready to go I'd be entering, but my Swift needs at least tyres and brakes before I'd take it anywhere near a track.
...I'm on eBay and Autotrader looking for something though!
Not sure where you're going with the question, but dedicated wet weather tyres are going to be beneficial on track. The risk comes purely down to the driver regardless of the weather. On a wet track the main thing to be mindful of is if you get onto the grass you're almost certainly heading...
In California I'd probably like the idea of something like that, especially taking it to the beach/surfing etc. In the gloomy UK it just doesn't have the same appeal to me. Same goes for Yank tanks... in the U.S they're super cool IMO but in England they're just pointless.
I think there's a...
I did sub 9:40 laps in my standard Swift on road brakes and tyres, on a really busy bank holiday with lots of traffic. I've been 8:40 in a 172 with a local German behind the wheel. One of my mates did 8:11 in his supercharged DC2, all the above are BTG of course.
It does make your opinion less valid, yes. We're not talking about lap records or British guys descending upon the 'Ring for the first time. There are lots of people during the summer months doing very quick laps of the circuit in some pretty potent cars, many of which are overtaking Ring Taxi's...
I agree in part with what Rob is saying. The Ring Taxi drivers can't take big risks just to impress you. It's their job to show you a quick but safe lap. They regularly get overtaken by the locals who can push without worrying about having paying customers onboard.
Kubica's lap looks good...
Funny analogy, but I'm not sure an old Volvo diesel is 'fun'. Retro cool yeah sure, but I think a 10yr old Focus would a better car to drive in every way. I do like Volvo's though don't get me wrong, I've been in quite a few and always liked them.
We're definitely singing from the same hymn sheet. I'm exactly the same in regards to being tight, sorry... Saving money!
I drive a little Swift Sport out of choice rather than financial constraints. I'd quite like something fancy but with British weather and the publics general disregard for...
I agree, but we also live in a society where people spend way beyond what their wallet will allow. I'm not saying the OP lives this way but I know a few of my friends do. You know where I'm coming from I'm sure!
I was told not to cover my car unless it's sheltered away from the weather, as the wind and rain move the cover around and it damages the paint. Covers also have to be breathable too, as a build up in condensation causes the car to rust prematurely.
Stick with insurance companies who specialise in performance/modified cars and go from there. Try calling the most commonly known companies and I'm surely you'll strike a deal with someone.
The driver would probably go even faster without that muppet riding shotgun. Can't stand him dissing the Lambo or whatever it is, especially as he's only passenger anyway.
